‘Avatar’ Earns $232 Mil (And Counting)
  |

Naysayers who said Avatar would be an utter flop were proven wrong on at least one front — the box office gross for the film’s opening weekend is an estimated $232.2 million.

That total is not even the full international release since the film has yet to be released in most of Asia. Director James Cameron has a very good track record for international box office openings, so don’t be surprised if the total grows significantly.

Now I’m not saying that just because Avatar will likely make its money back that it should be judged as a success. That will of course be a personal decision for everyone after they’ve seen it. It’s a decent indication, but not the only one.

With all the downtime provided by the holiday season, I’d expect strong box office numbers through the new year.

  1. It is freaking boring! I saw it 2-d, without the pretty 3-d gimickery it sucks! Think dances with wolves except the indians are nine feet tall and blue.

  2. It was meant to be in 3D! If you went to see it in 2D you didin’t get the full effect. It is amazing. I wish internet trolls would stop bad mouthingthe film. it has similar plot points to Dances with wolves. so what?

  3. I thought the movie was outstanding!! I’ve seen it 2x already and the 3d is far and above anything else ever done 3d-wise in movies. I think the movie would stand just fine even without the 3d kicking it over the top. I don’t recall the indians in Dances With Wolves fighting 9′ tall mechs or Osprey-like gunships? Dances With Wolves bored me to tears. Avatar had me on the edge of my seat with all the action sequences. Avatar is at the top of my favorite movies of all time list for sure!
