Kevin Smith’s Lengthy Explanation For ‘A Couple Of Dicks’ Title Change
space
The Movie God   |  @   |

Cop Out

Not one person was happy when A Couple of Dicks — the first Kevin Smith directed movie that wasn’t also written by him — was forced to renovate itself with the new, family-friendly Cop Out title for marketing purposes. Smith was peppered from all angles, particularly on Twitter where he tries to answer as many fan questions as he can, and repeatedly clarified that it wasn’t up to him; it was up to Warner Brothers. He had been in an epic battle not too long ago when that movie’s backers wanted to drop the “porno” from his Zack and Miri Make a Porno, which he ended up (thankfully) winning.

While speaking to Entertainment Weekly recently, Smith explained the whole ordeal in great detail and laced with sharp expletives in true Kevin Smith fashion. Said expletives were censored in the original article, but I’ve gone ahead and uncensored them, because let’s face it: it’s a lot more fun that way. That means there is a tiny language NSFW warning on this one, kiddies.

A Little ‘Fifth Element’ Spoof ‘Futurama’ Style For Your Viewing Pleasure

The Fifth Element

What’s the greatest thing in the world during the holiday season time period when absolutely no exciting news is being reported? Well, a super-duper new fan made piece of art work in which some of the beloved and soon-to-be-returning characters of the ultra-popular animated series Futurama are used in a spoof of the also-popular science fiction film, The Fifth Element…naturally!

The image takes the lead Bruce Willis character and replaces him with Philip J. Fry; the Milla Jovovich character and replaces her with Amy Wong; and the Chris Tucker character is replaced by Professor Hubert Farnsworth. Lesser bits of the movie like the singing blue chick are replaced by Leela…and yes, Bender does make a cameo.

‘The Twilight Saga’ Star Taylor Lautner May Also Star In A ‘Vision Quest’ Remake

The Movie God   |  @   |

Vision Quest

Not too long ago it was reported that Taylor Lautner, star of Twilight and The Twilight Saga: New Moon, had been cast as the lead in Paramount’s planned teen action flick Max Steel (Read: Resident “˜Twilight’ Wolf Pup Taylor Lautner To Become “˜Max Steel’). It appears now that the 17-year-old actor didn’t stop there: E! Online is reporting that Lautner is now also in some talks to take on the lead in a remake of 1985’s Vision Quest.

The original Vision Quest told the story of a mediocre high school wrestler (played by Matthew Modine) who decides that he needs to do something that people will remember, which turns out to be beating the undefeated best wrestler in the entire state. The goal is a seemingly impossible one, and is even hard due to his need to drop down two weight classes to pull it off. Things also get a little complicated on this quest of his, when his parents take in a much more mature 21-year-old drifter (Linda Fiorentino), who he falls in love with.

Image: Leonard Nimoy as Sherlock Holmes

Empress Eve   |  @   |

Leonard Nimoy as Sherlock HolmesAs I had hoped, my Christmas this year was filled with lots of Star Trek and Sherlock Holmes. Along with a viewing this weekend of the new Sherlock Holmes film, which opened Christmas Day, there was also a massive family gathering on Christmas night to watch the new Star Trek movie on Blu-ray.

And Santa brought me a bunch of Star Trek audiobooks, Blu-rays, and games (you can see a picture of my Trek haul over in TrekMovie‘s reader gift roundup post), as well as The Complete 2-Volume Annotated Sherlock Holmes, which I have had my eye on for the last five years and spent Christmas Eve night drooling over. Oh, and on Christmas we launched our The Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes’ Contest, where we have three sets of four all-new Sherlock Holmes novels to give away to our readers!

And what’s better than Star Trek and Sherlock Holmes? A combination of the two, that’s what! Hero Complex found a photo of Leonard Nimoy — everyone’s favorite Vulcan — portraying Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous literary detective during a national stage tour in the 1970s. (That’s the photo here at right; click for larger full view.)

Watch Now: The Who’s Rock Opera ‘Tommy’
space
Empress Eve   |  @   |

the who tommyThe Who, the 1960s rock legends, pretty much popularized the “rock opera” with their 1969 studio release Tommy, leading the way for Quadrophenia (The Who’s second rock opera), David Bowie’s The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, Pink Floyd’s The Wall, and even Jesus Christ Superstar.

From The Who’s concept album came the 1975 musical film Tommy, which starred Who leader singer Roger Daltrey as the title character, a traumatized young man who doesn’t hear or see or speak, but rises to fame and iconic status thanks to his prowess at pinball.

Now, Hulu has posted the film online for free viewing for people in the United States (there’s no embed is available, so head over to Hulu to watch it). It will only be available for the next five days, so watch it while you can.

Some of the actors — namely Oliver Reed as Tommy’s stepfather — pretty much butcher the vocals on what are really great Who songs. But, there are some standout performances overall, like Who drummer Keith Moon‘s portrayal of the perverted Uncle Ernie, Tina Turner as the drug-pushing Acid Queen, and Paul Nicholas as the torturous Cousin Kevin (who thinks of some nice games while the grown-ups have all gone away). There’s also a great musical performance by guitarist Eric Clapton, as well as one by Elton John, who plays Tommy’s pinball rival.
