Come Again? Jennifer Lopez Thinks She Deserved Oscar Nomination For ‘El Cantante’
  |  @   |

While this is not really news, it is without doubt a wholly amusing story to read. And considering it’s the weekend and slow enough on the web, why not read a quote that’ll make you chuckle, aye?

Jennifer Lopez, star of Selena, Maid in Manhattan, and Gigli, felt that her role in El Cantante should have at least nabbed her an Academy Award nomination, if not an actual win. El Cantante of course is the 2006 film in which she starred opposite of her husband Marc Antony. The movie is through the perspective of his wife Puchi (Lopez) and tells the story of Héctor Lavoe (Antony) and his arrival in America from Puerto Rico in the ’60s before rising to become one of the great Salsa singers of our time. It’s very much like Scarface, but with Salsa melodies instead of blow — though that all came with the fame as well.

While speaking to Latina Magazine, this is what Lopez had to say.

I feel like I had that [Oscar worthy role] in ‘El Cantante,’ but I don’t think the academy members saw it. It is a little bit frustrating. When the Oscars were on, I had just given birth on the 22nd, and the Oscars I think were a day or two later. I was sitting there with my twins “” and I couldn’t have been happier “” but I was like ‘How dope would it have been if I would’ve won the Oscar and been here in my hospital bed accepting the award?’

The movie was pretty universally panned by all who saw it, including Willie Colon, who was a close friend of the movie’s main character, Lavoe. Colon was quoted as saying “The Creators of El Cantante missed an opportunity to do something of relevance for our community. The real story was about Hector fighting the obstacles of a non-supportive industry that took advantage of entertainers with his charisma and talent. Instead they did another movie about two Puerto Rican junkies. The impact of drugs in the entertainment industry is nothing new; look at Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan and Whitney Houston today,” which fits what most seemed to believe was wrong with the film.

I suppose with Sandra Bullock getting buzz as an Oscar contender for The Blind Side, this wouldn’t be so strange to see happening right now. Even so, it was a pretty cocky little line to spew and she’ll certainly be hearing about it. You know if you’re seeing gossipy crap like this on our site, it must have been a fairly outrageous statement.

Isn’t being famous fun?

  1. Hector deserved a much better film about his life.

  2. This also reminds me of Madoona getting all upset she didn’t score an oscar for Evita.

  3. Madonna and Jennifer are very similar in that they are great to look at and know their marketing, but don’t really have good singing voices or acting talent. They work super hard and that brought them great success as a result, even without said talent, so I applaud them.

  6. Shows you where her head was at. She had just given birth to her first children – twins – and was lying in a hospital bed thinking wouldn’t it have been DOPE (seriously, dope?) to have won the Oscar and accepted from her bed. Yes, I’m sure someone as vain as her would have really wanted to be seen by millions in her hospital bed after giving birth. C’mon. She’s plain retarded, I’m sorry. Oh, and seriously? SHe cannot sing. She can dance (or she used to at least), I’ll give her that; and her movies, well, she was OK in them. But really, JLo or whatever your name is now, please stop singing, and definitely stop singing in Spanish too.

  7. I am just glad to hear I am not the only one who scoffed at her use of the word ‘dope’. I find her to be so incredibly obnoxious.
