Fable III

The work on Fable III is already well under-way, and with promises of a Holiday season 2010 release date, the folks at Lionhead Studios have a lot on their plate these days. None-the-less, things seem to be going well, and after some big announcements made recently, the studio has released a new video diary to warm up your excitement levels for the third adventure.

Lionhead top dog Peter Molyneaux recently spoke at the X10 convention, and arrived with promises of the announcements of major changes to the Fable franchise that would likely leave many angered. As it turns out, all of the big changes actually sound pretty exciting, and, depending on how well the concepts translate to gameplay, they could make for a very cool, very unique Fable III experience.

Among the many changes being reported out of the convention, it looks as if Lionhead is ready to take our hand (literally) and guide us away from the games that we’re familiar with today, including Fable II. For example: there will be no more health bars or orbs of experience or any of that. Everything will depend solely on who you are and what you do with your Fable III life.

This sounds crazy, of course, but when you really think about it, it’s all just the natural evolution of Fable as a whole. When Fable II first came out, I found myself daydreaming about a Fable game one day where you begin as a child, live a full life, raise a family, and become someone of great good or evil. Then, when you die, you take over the game as your son or daughter and repeat the cycle. As you repeat this a few times, you not only affect the history of Albion, but create your own bloodline and family history. Whether this will ever happen, who knows…I like to dream big and hope so.

Another massive addition to this game will be a new touch system. This system will allow you affect certain people in the game a certain way by holding their hand or hugging them and so on. One example given is of a moment when your wife panics about your missing child, and when you find the distraught child, you can lightly scold them for the scare; and when they become upset at this, you can hold them or play with them in order to calm them down. On the other end of things, you can be evil and take the hand of a homeless person and lead them to a work factory to sell them off as a slave. Once this person realizes that your intentions are not good, they will begin to pull and tug to escape your grasp. This system will add a new layer of realism to your relationships, and bring the level of personal emotion to a whole new plateau.

I only have one major fear at the moment, and it is indeed a large fear. While I loved Fable II, I could not look past many of its flaws. My own personal game had so many glitches that I was literally shocked that they had not been discovered and remedied before the game’s release. Anyone who played the game will also recall the…appearance of your character (male characters, anyway), and how goofy they looked as adults. Very difficult to immerse yourself in a person you need to hide in outfits to make them look acceptable.

The speed at which Fable III‘s release is promised makes me terrified of these things becoming an issue once again, but my love for that world has me itching to return. It looks like it’s all just cross your fingers and hope for the very best now.

Official Synopsis

In Fable III, the latest installment of the critically acclaimed Xbox 360 exclusive franchise, fans new and returning will now embark on an epic adventure, where the race for the crown is only the beginning of your spectacular journey. Five decades have passed since the events of Fable II, and Albion has matured into an industrial revolution, but the fate of the kingdom is at peril.

You will be called upon to rally and fight alongside your people, ascend to the seat of power, and experience the realities of defending your throne. Along your journey, the choices you make will change the world around you, for the greater good or your own personal gain. Who will you become? A rebel without a cause, the tyrant you rebelled against, or the greatest ruler to ever live?
