David Goyer Writing ‘Superman’ Reboot ‘The Man Of Steel’ [Updated]
  |

See story update at the end of this post…

Those lovable Latinos over at Latino Review have some major DC news for us today.

According to their sources, David S. Goyer himself will be writing the new Superman reboot film to be titled Man Of Steel. Superman Returns fans may not be pleased to know Bryan Singer and Brandon Routh will not be involved.

Goyer is apparently going for more of the John Byrne Superman feel from the 80’s comic reboot. This means it will not be an origin story and takes the stance that audiences already know who Superman is and where he came from. The studio wants to make Superman modern, believable, and most of all FUN! Brainiac is the villain so we don’t have to sit through another Lex Luthor real estate scheme (thank God). Also of note, the Daily Planet is struggling due to the internet and the film is setting up a huge Kryptonian mythology.

For the non-comic reading fans, Byrne’s reboot was part of a company-wide restructuring of the DC Universe and all of its characters after Crisis on Infinite Earths. At the time, Byrne said, “I’m taking Superman back to the basics … It’s basically Siegel and Shuster’s Superman meets the Fleischer Superman in 1986.” He made a number of alterations to the character including significantly reducing his powers, eliminating the Fortress of Solitude/some of the sillier aspects of the Silver Age like Krypto, erasing the idea of “˜Superboy’ (he doesn’t put on his famous costume until adulthood), and his foster parents (the Kents) remained alive while Superman was an adult to enjoy their adopted son’s triumphs as well as to provide him with moral support, grounding, and advice whenever he needed it (think Lois & Clark).

As a huge Superman fan this is exciting news for me. Goyer has been hit-or-miss with me but I’m confident he has a story in mind that will bring the Man of Steel back to prominence in the film world. What are your thoughts?

[Update]

(By Empress Eve)

Of course, as soon as a site like Latino Review gets a good scoop, someone has to try to debunk it. Harry from AICN just spoke with Thomas Tull at Legendary Pictures who said that LR’s report that Goyer had been hired to pen the Man Of Steel script is “just frankly isn’t true” and that it “just isn’t accurate” because he has not “unilaterally hired Goyer” and that the project is not even in the script stage yet.

You know what this means? It means Goyer WILL pen the script, the studio just wasn’t ready to announce it or perhaps the monetary issues have not been worked out yet. LR’s track record is pretty good and unlike other sites that make up stories just for hits, LR’s sources typically pan out, so we’re gonna stick with them. But, we figured we’d give you the update nonetheless. Don’t be surprised when Variety confirms this news two months from now and barely mentions LR (and if they do, we know they won’t properly source the original story because creating hyperlinks is beyond their capabilities).

More updates:
Variety wrote a story matching LR’s while THR’s Heat Vision also sources LR, but said, “No dealmaking has taken place; only meetings are happening at this stage. Reps for Warners and Goyer had no comment.”

  1. Fucking LOVE John Byrne, if they are going that route, I’m all for it. I trust Goyer (even after The Unborn) and think he’ll do a great job on this. Also, enough with Lex Luthor, I couldn’t be more sick of him, so I’m glad they’re done with that. Bring on Brainiac!
