‘Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions’ Looks Potentially ‘Amazing’

Spider-ManI’m always curious about Spider-Man video game releases because there have been amazing games and there have been not so amazing games. The latest is Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, which will see Spider-Man jumping into four separate Marvel universes! The explanation for the reality rift revolves around a mysterious artifact called the Tablet of Order and Chaos which gets shattered into four pieces, creating problems with reality.

The different realities have me really intrigued, never before in a Spider-Man title have we seen multiple realities of Spider-Man actually affect the gameplay and the story-line. Previously in Spider-Man games you would have alternate Spidey costumes but they were just skins that didn’t change how your character played.

So far 2 of the 4 realities/dimensions have been revealed, Noir and Amazing, which are from the Marvel Comics series’ of the same names. The Marvel Noir universe is pretty cool and worth a look if you’re not familiar. The last 2 realities will be revealed at a later date on the official Shattered Dimensions website. Early indications are that Spider-Man 2099 may be one of the unannounced dimensions. GameStop apparently had images of the game’s pre-order bonus cosmic costumes, one of which looks to be a cosmic version of Spider-Man 2099. The images are no longer available on GameStop‘s site but Kotaku was able to grab the images before they were taken down though.

There are so many Spider-Man reality opportunities they could possibly use and I really can’t wait to see what they reveal later. Joystiq has an interesting look at some of the possibilities.

Gamespot has an interview with Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions producer Meghan Morgan that’s worth a look.

Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions is coming for PlayStation 3, Wii, and Xbox 360 this September with a Nintendo DS version also in the works.

Check out the first trailer below.

  1. oh wow… huge spiderman fan, I have about 100 of the amazing spiderman issues and have most of the games… this is officially on the top of my ‘Can’t wait until it comes out’ list.

  2. Wow, if this game is half as cool as it looks I’ll be a happy camper.

  3. This game looks awful. The trailer did nothing for me and judging by early impressions of the game, it plays just as bad. Count on it. This will be a stinker. And it ain’t even open world.

  4. Is it official that this will not have open world gameplay? I am not doubting, I just have not seen it published anywhere.

  5. Frankly, I’m actually kind of relieved that they’re dropping the sandbox gameplay. In my opinion, no Spider-Man game yet has delivered a tight enough level of combat mechanics, every game thus far can be won by button mashing and the combos just felt like pointless afterthoughts. The fact that Activision are taking a chance and making a few changes shows that they at least care about what they’re trying to do this time, if they can deliver a game with an involving story, variety/flexibility in the gameplay and tightened combat – they’ll have achieved something that has never been done with a Spider-Man game before.

On the other hand, Activision might just be slapping together any old game and promoting the Alternate Spideys to turn heads – a cynical part of me is wary that this could be Shovel-ware of the highest order.

Either way, I’m interested in the development of Shattered Dimensions; far more so than if Activision had just announced another annual update of the stale ‘Sandbox Spidey’ template.
