Dark Life

We’re still patiently awaiting a movie based on the horrific underwater video game, Bioshock, but Walt Disney may be looking to transport us to the ocean’s floor a little sooner.

It’s being reported that director Robert Zemeckis is adding yet another project to his ever-growing to-do list. Zemeckis will take on an adaptation of the Kat Falls novel, Dark Life, which hasn’t even hit bookshelves yet. Buying up rights to books that haven’t come out yet has become another one of Hollywood’s common habits; a rather risky move considering no one knows how the book itself will be received. If this ends up being a big success on page and screen, however, then they all look like geniuses.

Dark Life is set in the near future when real-world issues like global warming have lead to water levels rising past the point of no return, leading to massive devastation and many people moving into new settlements on the ocean floors. Over the years, this has lead to the development of many special abilities in younger kids and teens. One of these teens is a boy named Ty, who finds himself joining forces with a girl who lives on the surface to combat those who threaten them and their families.

Synopsis

Set in an apocalyptic future where rising oceans have swallowed up entire regions and people live packed like sardines on the dry land left, DARK LIFE is the harrowing tale of underwater pioneers who have carved out a life for themselves in the harsh deep-sea environment, farming the seafloor in exchange for the land deed.

The story follows Ty, who has lived his whole life on his family’s homestead and has dreams of claiming his own stake when he turns eighteen. But when outlaw attacks on government supply ships and settlements threaten to destroy the underwater territory, Ty finds himself in a fight to stop the outlaws and save the only home he has ever known.

Joined by a girl from the Topside who has come subsea to look for her prospector brother, Ty ventures into the frontier’s rough underworld and begins to discover some dark secrets to Dark Life.

As Ty gets closer to the truth, he discovers that the outlaws may not be the bloodthirsty criminals the government has portrayed them as. And that the government abandoning the territory might be the best thing for everyone, especially for someone like Ty, someone with a Dark Gift.

The main question in all of this will of course be whether Zemeckis will be making a live-action movie, or if he’ll be sticking with his motion-capture technology for it. I have to assume it will be motion-capture — with the option, such a water-heavy premise will be easier to execute for him using computers, but we will have to wait and see.

No word yet on when we can expect Dark Life, but the book is set for a released on May 1, 2010.
