Geeks of Doom Invades WonderCon 2010

Chuck panel WonderCon 2010Positive emotions were high among attendees at Sunday’s WonderCon 2010 Chuck panel featuring Zachary Levi, Josh Gomez, and Adam Baldwin, along with show creator/producers Chris Fedak and Josh Schwartz. This was no doubt caused by the Con’s surprise screening of the latest episode a day earlier than its regular prime time air date.

That episode, “Chuck vs. The Other Guy” was originally written as the show’s Season 3 finale, but after the network ordered more than its initial 13-episode run, the team had an option to amend it for the new finale but decided against it after reading the script.

“Essentially we had designed the whole season to get to that point… Chuck and Sarah in Paris,” Fedak said.

“It actually works out great for fans because you get what was designed to be a season finale in the middle of the season and then it’s on us to ramp it back up again, Schwartz said. “So you get twice as much excitement. It’s a win-win.”

Having attended the screening at WonderCon, I can say that I wish I could watch every episode with hundreds of adoring fans. It felt more like I was watching a cult classic I’d never seen than television programing.

Obviously major plot lines were tied up, revelations were had, and some roster changes were made to the list of active agents operating in Castle (the CIA headquarters located underneath the Buymore). If you have been following the show at all this season then definitely make sure to see it if you didn’t already do so last night.

Also, a new campaign to preemptively save the show from the threat of cancellation was dubbed unknowingly by Levi himself during the panel: Save Chuck, Hack Nielsen.

Nielsen is the company whose business revolves around gauging ratings for television shows by placing set top boxes in a demographic-sample of the total available viewing population.

This all came in response to a panel question asking what fans can do to most effectively keep the show on the air for many more seasons to come. Levi then said the best way is still watching it live (the old fashioned way) because that’s where the most advertising support comes from.

What Levi meant by “Hack Nielsen” was that if you don’t have one of these set top boxes, either find a friend who does and make them watch the show week-to-week, or hack the box.

The crew also discussed what’s to come in the remaining season, which includes Scott Bakula reprising his role as Chuck’s father; Casey (Baldwin) gaining some resolution with his family; and a show featuring Christopher Lloyd that “may or may not” have Chuck referring to him as “Doc,” according to Levi.

Check out our video coverage of the WonderCon 2010 panel below for more info about what’s to come in the future for Chuck and the gang.

Chuck airs Mondays at 7/8 p.m. EST on NBC.

  1. Sounds like you had a great time. I wish I was there. Chuck is an amazing show. NBC is crazy for ever thinking of ending it too soon.
