I remembered reading collections of Muppets comic strips as a kid, and this Muppet Show Comic Book series is very much in the vein of those past comics.

The story begins with Statler and Waldorf, the hecklers from the balcony, playing a game of chess with pieces resembling the Muppets. They talk of introducing a new character into the equation. Actually, it’s more of a new/old character. This character was on the Muppet Babies series, but to my knowledge had never appeared as a grownup until now. I don’t want to give away the name of the character, but it was interesting. It was very fun to see this character as an adult Muppet, and it was also cool to see a bridge between the Muppet Babies cartoon and the comics. I had always thought of the cartoon and the Muppet Show as existing in the same universe, and this issue verified that.

Roger Langridge‘s portrayal of the Muppets is very accurate. Kermit is the driven, focused leader of this band of creatures; Miss Piggy is still a total diva; and Scooter is the kind, thoughtful, brainy one. There was even a moment where Sam the Eagle attempted to deliver a monologue. The high-strung blue eagle has always been a favorite of mine due to his appearance and his demeanor. Gonzo also engaged in a lot of his usual weird shenanigans. The bulk of this issue focused on the return of this old friend and the old friend’s attempt to join The Muppet Show. The character interactions between the returning character and the regular cast seemed very natural. I really hope this character becomes a regular.

Langridge also broke away from the regular story with wacky segments such as Bunsen and Beeker in the lab and Pigs in Space. These segments really made me feel like I was a little kid watching the Muppet Show or reading the old comic strips. Bunsen and Beeker’s segment is insane and off the wall, and also references a popular song by Queen. The Pigs in Space segment seemed so familiar and goofy that I almost thought I heard the announcer from the TV show saying, “Pigs in Spaaaace!”

The Muppet Show Comic Book #4 was a very solid issue. If you were a fan of the original show or the movies, or if you just want something zany and harmless for your kids, I strongly suggest picking this up. My only disappointment was that I really wanted some horrible Fozzy Bear humor in this issue. Hopefully, he’ll have more of a role in the next issue. The Muppet Show Comic Book #4 continues the amazing trend of awesome all-ages books by BOOM! Studios and I look forward to more hilarity and hijinks in the next issue.
