Will Joss Whedon Also Be Rewriting ‘The Avengers’ AND ‘Captain America’?
  |  @   |

It was pretty crazy to discover that geek god of all things fanboy Joss Whedon was going to direct Marvel Studios massive culmination of characters and storylines in The Avengers. But now it looks like Marvel might be ready to really hand Whedon the keys to the car.

According to reports, not only will Whedon be directing The Avengers, but he’ll also be rewriting Zak Penn‘s script. This doesn’t mean that he’ll be throwing the entire script away and starting all over, but what he will be doing is going over everything, removing and replacing some things, and adding whatever he thinks might be crucial to the story or his style of directing.

On top of all of this, Pajiba has it on good authority that Whedon might even be taking the script for The First Avenger: Captain America and giving it the same touch-up treatment that he’ll be giving to The Avengers.

This all means that Whedon is walking into this massive pre-existing world that has been growing over the past few years, preparing to join forces, and that he’ll be responsible for bringing it all together when it finally does. And now, that doesn’t just mean taking what he’s given and making the best movie he can from it, but it means putting a massive self-signature on his movie AND Joe Johnston‘s Captain America.

Fans of Whedon won’t think twice about whether the popular writer can pull this off, but surely there will be those who are highly skeptical of how things are going. I’m personally a major Whedon fan and I don’t have a clue what’s going to happen, to be honest.

But considering Joss Whedon’s love of comics and his finally getting this chance to really shine with the biggest of spotlights burning his face red (and with a failed Wonder Woman project eating at him), I have to think that’s he’ll have all the motivation in the world and that we’re not going to be let down when this is all said and done.

  1. It seems like Marvel has bought into the false pretense that Whedon is, as you said, a “geek god of all things fanboy”. He’s certainly popular but not such as that. He’s a better writer than he is a director, but I would hope he doesn’t change Penn’s script too much.

I’m not trying to be a Whedon hater; I’m just not a big fan.

  2. I am trying to be a Whedon hater! His scripts are hammy, corny and any other type of food related -ey you can think of. Alien resurrection was awful, Buffy and Angel were just retarded, and firefly was just OK.Honestly he should be forced to write more teeny bopper crap for the WB because his style is more Gilmore girls than superheroes! But hey this is what you get when the marvel movie world is slowly self destructing.
