In a time when all you had to go on were your brains and your brawn, and warlocks and mythical creatures were around, we find the hero of our story Krod Mandoon. This somewhat insecure but courageous hero is thrown into many situations that would normally take great skill to escape. Fortunately for him and his band of somewhat bumbling misfits, pure dumb luck is on their side as well. Krod Mandoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire is a six-episode miniseries created by Peter A. Knight for BBC Two and Comedy Central.

I was not sure what to make of this show when I first saw the advertisement playing on Comedy Central last summer, but I knew one thing for sure, that it looked hilarious. To my surprise it did not disappoint. While having a bit of a slow start (which is to be expected of new shows sometimes) it gradually gets better as it goes. If you love corny and raunchy humor, then you will love this series.

With its style, you could compare this as similar humor to Monty Python and the Holy Grail. In this we find Krod Mandoon (Sean Maguire) as a freedom fighter against the evil Chancellor Dongalor (Matt Lucas). Along with his somewhat trusty band of warriors, they take on the fight of their lives to help the resistance. As a little side note, if you look at the name Krod it is “Dork” spelled backwards. With a flaming sword of fire to help in the heat of battle (no pun intended), they battle everything from Chancellor Dongalor’s soldiers, Succubi, and a Biclops, which if you watch this you will understand why he is called that and not just a Cyclops.

I enjoyed the dimwittedness of Krod and Chancellor Dongalor and the scenarios they put themselves in, the likeness of the Chancellor’s right-hand man to Severus Snape from Harry Potter. The type of humor although dry in some areas, very witty in others. I really enjoyed seeing John Rhys-Davies in here along with a couple other recognizable cast members and some of the great one liners such as “Mano e Mandoono” instead of “Mano e Mano”, not sure if that’s the correct spelling but you get the idea.

Special features for this DVD include extended scenes and behind the scenes, cast interviews, outtakes, and a behind the scenes tour with Kevin Hart, who played Zezelryck, Krod’s fairly useless warlock.

I recommend this to anybody who wants a good laugh, whether you end up loving all of it or only part of it. It is definitely worth checking out.

  1. I’m sad that this didn’t get a second season. I enjoyed watching it and it seemed like the production costs were probably fairly low.

  2. This was a surprise hit for me and my dad. we used to watch all those syndicated sword and hero shows back in the day, and we love Sean Maguire in “Meet the Spartans”, but we weren’t sure we’d enjoy this that much. We definitely did. As a sidenote one of the creators of Monty Python had a hand in the show, so that might be why it was Monty Python-esque. Ahh I’m sorry this won’t see another season, but really it was a weird show for Comedy Central to be showing to begin with you know?
