Cloverfield

UPDATE: According to our own exclusive spy report earlier today, it looks like this is indeed the Abrams/Spielberg collaboration touched on at the bottom of this post. Cloverfield 2 shall have to wait.

Remember how much crazy viral attention was brought in as J.J. Abrams and company masterfully lured us along with his “dollar bill attached to a string” teases of 2008’s Cloverfield?

Whether you love that movie or not, there is absolutely no denying how much fun it was to take each piece of mysterious video, images, or websites and try to figure out just what was going on as we paused and squinted a thousand times. At one point, people even thought it was going to be a Voltron movie! C’mon now, that’s brilliantly deceptive marketing and EVERYONE wanted to see what all the hype was about when the time came.

Now, rumors are flooding out that a teaser trailer for Cloverfield 2 might just be revealed to you when you go and see Iron Man 2 this weekend. And if this is so, let the viral anarchy begin!

When the movie was released, many loved it as expected, but many hated it as well…which was also kind of expected. Since then, a sequel has always been discussed and both Abrams and director Matt Reeves have said that they would pursue a second movie if the right story was figured out, and we’ve been waiting ever since.

The report began at HitFix, who discovered that Abrams was producing a new movie currently known as Super 8, and that the super-secretive teaser trailer for the film would be playing before Iron Man 2.

How secretive you ask? The final cut of IM2 is being sent to theater managers in three separate cans, with each can containing three sections of the film that will form up to create the it in its entirety, trailers and all. The third can will be specially coded and locked, and it will not be able to be opened until Thursday at 3pm EST, allowing theaters minimal time to put all of the parts together in time for their midnight showings. In this ultra-secure third can are the trailers (including the Abrams mystery-project, Super 8), the beginning of Iron Man 2, and the end of the movie, which supposedly includes another exciting extra scene equal to the Nick Fury introduction at the end of the first movie.

Easy as that! Click the link to HitFix above to see a cool image running down the Iron Man 2 protocol.

After this initial information got everyone foaming at the mouth about Cloverfield 2, NY Mag’s Vulture Blog brought more booze to the party, apparently discovering exactly what we would see in the teaser for Super 8. If you don’t want to know anything, do NOT read any further. You have been warned.

According to Vulture’s sources, the teaser shows a group of teens filming random stuff with their Super 8mm camera in either the ’70s or maybe the ’80s. When they go to get their footage developed, they spot what looks to be some kind of strange creature in one of the frames.

That’s it. Ta-da! Just enough to piss you off and make you want more.

Clearly this sounds like a perfect set-up for Cloverfield 2, but woah, woah, woah, now…not so fast — many seem to think that it could also be for a project that Abrams has coming up with a one Mr. Steven Spielberg. At the end of April, Vulture once again had a scoop that Abrams was going to be directing and “collaborating” with Spielberg on a top secret movie that would be a homage to the living legend’s films of the ’70s and ’80s…which kinda-sorta fits the teaser description.

Though Abrams was said to still be finishing that script, this Super 8 teaser trailer was filmed strictly for marketing reasons, meaning there’s still plenty of time to finish the script and work all the other details out later; this is just to plant the intrigue seed.

That about wraps up the conspiracy madness today. What do you think? Is this going to end up being Cloverfield 2, or a new project with Steven Spielberg? Are you now more excited to see Iron Man 2 to try and get a peek at this teaser?

  1. If it’s true, and if the sequel is filmed in the same style, I’m inclined to wait for it to come to Blu-ray, and not because I’m not really interested, but because the film is actually intended to be watched in home viewing. If you go back and watch the movie, the disorientation feeling is greatly lessened and it’s a much more enjoyable film.

Narratively, I don’t think another one needs to happen, but in monster films, that sentiment is out the window.

Speaking of Voltron, in July, he’s coming back in a different medium: http://monsterpocalypse.com/voltron

  2. What if it’s both?

  3. This is exciting! Will admit that I wasn’t a big fan of the style in which Cloverfield was filmed (the amateur video camera thing), but was somewhat impressed with the little bits of story gleaned about the monster. I liked the little baby monsters that spawned off the big one, was intrigued by what happened to the people who were bitten and was thoroughly spooked by the Cloverfield monster itself! I liked seeing that the military, for all it’s training and preparation, were admittedly outmatched and panicked as much as the civilians. Hearing about a possible sequel? Didn’t originally think I’d care but will admit that I’m curious after finally watching the first!

  4. On the DVD, the creators made a note that the monster in the first film was designed with the idea that it was only a baby…

  5. I’ve already seen Iron Man 2 in England. There was no Super 8 trailer. There better be an official online version fast next weekend.

  6. @Slipstream

Whether this is for a Cloverfield sequel or not, if and when they do make a sequel I’ve been hoping they touch on what you mentioned: that it was a baby.

    We need to meet mommy.

  7. I didn’t realize how much I liked that movie until I saw it at home. I’d like another Cloverfield but not done in the same style. However I don’t want it to turn out like Blair Witch 2 either.

  8. This can not be a sequel to cloverfield, as Cloverfield took place in 2008, and Super 8 takes place in 1979. It can’t be a prequel either, because you see in the end of the first movie, how Cloverfield got here. Spielberg is producing, not a double-team directing. You got my hopes up, I am let down.

You are responding to the original report, where that was the information at the time. We updated it right at the top of this post long before you comment, but it doesn’t seem like you noticed.

  10. Alright guys listen up! Cloverfield 2 isn’t happening. EVER. I’m just as sad as anyone. I’ve been waiting for this sequel since the day I saw the first Cloverfield. I know the assistant director for this film and he finally came clean. No Cloverfield sequel is ever going to happen. And I’m serious. Its not happening.

  13. What ever happened to originality? I’am so sick of remakes, sequels and prequels. Most movies now are intentionally made leaving the audience hanging. As with “Cloverfield”, there were more questions at the end than at the start. But remakes of tired zombie and super hero themes that only offer another version of the same crap in more CG,3D and louder surround, have gotten really old. I hope I’m wrong, but a resurrected “Superman” is in the works. At least Cloverfield (2) has potential in originality.
