You had me from “Hello Apollo, where should I begin.”

Pardon me while I fanboy…

First, I’d like to state that I am, indeed, a huge fan of Coheed and Cambria, and their album In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3 (henceforth to be referred to as IKSSE:3), so it’s pretty much a given that I will love this comic book if it stays anywhere near what the album did for me.

Coheed and Cambria, the band, has a series of five albums, each telling an integral part to an overall science fiction story about the destruction of these characters’ universe (The Keywork) and the rise of its rightful hero, Claudio Kilgannon. All of this is done through the glory of prog rock. There have been previous interpretations of Coheed’s work including a novel adaptation of the first chapter, Year of the Black Rainbow, and an original graphic novel based on Chapter IV: Good Apollo, I’m Burning Star: IV, which is now considered out of continuity. But IKSSE:3 picks up from the latest comic interpretation of Chapter II: The Second Stage Turbine Blade. I’ve keep up with pretty much all of this, so I was definitely excited for the release of this story.

What I didn’t expect was how good it was going to be, and although this is an issue #1, it really felt more like a #0 because this issue really deals with a preview of what we will see in the series really telling us the cast of characters, and this preview is done with a clever nod to the album.

With an inner monologue by our hero, Claudio Kilgannon describes his anticipation and expectation of his former lover’s response to his absent calls to her home. She expects Newo to answer the phone with great excitement of the certainty of his safety, but he cannot bring himself to speak to his true love after leaving her unprotected in a universe in turmoil. When he begins to leave her yard, he is confronted by Newo’s dog, Apollo.

“Hello Apollo, where should I begin” is one of the most ominous lines in all of Coheed’s work, and the the line is used in this comic book as a catalyst to catch up the readers to all of the events that have happened in the previous chapter (The Amory Wars: Second Stage Turbine Blade) as well as introducing us to the cast of character for the current chapter. Faces that I did not expect to see right off include Inferno, the ghost of Coheed Kilgannon, Wilhelm Ryan, as well as smaller glimpses of Al the Killer, one of Coheed’s most infamous characters in the mythos of the Amory Wars.

Issue #1 of IKSSE:3 does a great job bringing anyone who might be unfamiliar with the world of the Amory Wars up to speed to with enough mystery to keep the reader interested, while also giving a hint of what’s to come through the development of Claudio beginning to use his powers, which he had sworn off in the previous issue. On a writing standpoint this issue holds its own and stands pretty close to perfect. Unfortunately though, the art really leaves a lot to be desired, although there is indeed promise. Most of the faces look a little rushed on the men, but you can tell Burnham has what it takes through his illustrations of the Prise and other females in the book. So, here’s hoping that with the next installment the art will start to meld with the writing.

Bring on issue #2, let’s get this started!
