Brett Ratner To Produce Live-Action Update Of ‘Snow White’
  |  @   |

As was completely expected, Disney classics and fairy tale reinventions are continuing to grow toward being the next big craze.

Alice in Wonderland of course got a new live-action/motion-capture makeover and Johnny Depp, and went on to pull down over a billion dollars worldwide. Since then, we’ve heard that a new take on the evil Sleeping Beauty villain called Maleficent was on the way, and that a new live-action take on the tale of Cinderella was in motion as well.

Now comes word via Deadline that a brand new version of Snow White is now in the making. Relativity Media has preemptively acquired the rights to The Brothers Grimm: Snow White, which is a script penned by Melisa Wallack (Bill). The script is said to be a lot more faithful to the 500-year-old folk tale that Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was based on, and that it will be much more edgy and funnier.

One of the producers on this project is Brett Ratner, who had this to say about this new fairy tale reinvention.

This is not your grandfather’s Snow White. Melisa went back to the 500 year old folk tale and put in some of the things that were missing from Walt Disney’s film. His dwarves were miners, and here they are robbers. There is also a dragon that was in the original folk tale. Walt made one of the great movies of all time, but ours is edgy and there is more comedy. The original, made for its time, was soft compared to what we’re going to do.

It seems like almost any time you hear of a fairy tale of any kind being re-imagined such as this, it always had to be darker or edgier. This makes sense because it allows you to preserve the integrity of the original while offering an exciting new take on the story with new visuals and new styles. Even so, people will be cautiously optimistic about this new Snow White and how it actually plays out.

As far as I’m concerned, if anyone wants to really make a dark and edgy movie based on our beloved classic fairy tales, they need not look any farther than Bill Willingham’s Fables graphic novel series. Turn THAT into a movie and you shall blow minds…and perhaps even piss off a few purists.
