Must Watch! The Bloody, Graphic ‘Mortal Kombat’ Movie You’ve Been Dying To See
  |  @   |

Recently, a super-trailer of sorts showed up online for what looked like some kind of new live-action Mortal Kombat movie. The video runs seven minutes and forty-nine seconds in length, and is incredibly dark and violent, just like Mortal Kombat should be.

Sadly, of all the movies spawned from the popular video game series, which launched on the Sega Genesis system in 1992, none have them have really held up. The first flick — directed by Paul W.S. Anderson and released in 1995 — was fun because most fans of the games were young enough to enjoy it at time of release, but it has not aged well and said fans are eager to the idea of a film as violent and fun as the games were way back then.

This could be that movie…if Warner Brothers decides it so.

Use your favorite fatality code to get yourself over to the other side and watch the video for Mortal Kombat: Rebirth immediately if you have yet to see it! May be NSFW to some.

You see, at the time, no one knew exactly what this video was made for. It was directed by Kevin Tancharoen (who’s credits surprisingly deal mostly in song and dance musical types like Fame) and choreographed by Larnell Stovall, and starred Michael Jai White, Jeri Ryan, and Ian Anthony Dale, so we knew it wasn’t some home movie passion project. This leads to two options: it’s for a new game, or it’s for a new movie.

The answer is that it’s not really for either officially, but for a desired movie. Ryan was sure to clear everything up on her Twitter account, explaining the point of the video.

Okay, so… Mortal Kombat. It’s not a game trailer. Actually was made for the director to sell WB on his vision for a reimagined MK film.

I did it as a favor to a friend. No idea yet what WB’s reaction to it was. And I’m not sure how you can contact WB to push them to make it. But you guys are resourceful…!

And there you have it. You can see the video for yourself below. It’s easily better than all of the other movies we’ve seen combined, and it’s only eight minutes long. The only thing I wasn’t a big fan of is the fight scene — still seemed a little cheesy considering how gritty the rest is — though the end of said fight was pretty great and exactly what we need to see more of if this movie is ever made.

If you want to help get the R-rated Mortal Kombat you’ve always wanted, someone has already made a Facebook page with information on how to contact Warner Bros. and beg them to make it happen.

  1. There is a good story in there waiting to happen. Take the source material seriously and hire actors who are aware that great acting is in the subtle details *ahem* not Michael Jai White

  2. Not sure we actually need great acting in a Mortal Kombat movie.

It’s more about the tone, style, and presentation, as you saw in that video. Thought White was perfectly acceptable — I personally don’t need Jax winning an Oscar.

Could they cast better? Absolutely, but that’s not my main concern.

  3. I am excited, I thought the acting was solid and the tone was great. I am a little hesitant about the realism of all characters fitting in to the modern world as we know it, but it could definitely work. I am just glad that VGs as source material are being considered by the major studios and not just being spewed out like Uwe Bullcrap.

  4. Looks good. The acting can be more professional but I don’t mind cos it knows it’s not a serious movie, but a serious take on the game, which is more understanding.
