Geena Davis & Michael Keaton Want ‘Beetlejuice 2’ But Do You?

The Movie God   |  @   |

If you haven’t come to terms with the fact that sequels and remakes are just a normal, everyday part of the Hollywood machine, then you better get used to it quickly. The sooner you do, the sooner you can enjoy the prospect of a movie like Beetlejuice II happening, instead of immediately scorning the very thought.

Before you starting heating up with rage, no, no there’s not a sequel to Tim Burton‘s fantastic 1988 horror-comedy on the way…yet. This is simply a hypothetical question ignited by some interesting quotes excavated by Moviehole over the past couple months.

Apparently there was a script put together in the ’90s that saw the Deetz family moving to Hawaii where Charles Deetz (Jeffrey Jones) was building a resort that turned out to be located on top of a burial ground. The movie obviously never played out, but that’s where any sequel curiosity stems from.

Back in April, the site caught up with Geena Davis and asked what her thoughts were on a sequel ever happening. When asked, Davis stated:

I would do that! Thing is, do ghosts age? Wouldn’t we be stuck in the age we were? Alec [Baldwin] and I would have to look as we did then – who knows, maybe we could? I better get in touch with Tim Burton.

So naturally, while at the press junket for Pixar’s Toy Story 3, the site got their hands on Michael Keaton and asked the very same question. Surprisingly, Keaton wasn’t shy about the idea at all, making it very clear that “Oh I’d do that in a heartbeat. Absolutely, that’s the one thing I’d love to do again. That’s the only one I’d love to do.”

So that makes two of the four big stars that you would probably require for a sequel all set and ready to go. Davis does make a very solid point about the whole ghosts aging thing (she is a member of Mensa, you know) but surely when dealing with the supernatural there would be some kind of loop to use.

I say get Burton, get Winona Ryder, get Alec Baldwin, and do this immediately. As I said above, we need to know that this is just part of the game now, and whether a sequel ended up being horrible or not, it’d still be pretty cool to see where they went with it. Worst case scenario we just forget it ever happened; best case scenario we get a decent new sequel to watch with the first flick.

Tim Burton has made some good movies over the last decade, but aside from Big Fish, none of them have even come close to touching his work from the ’80s and early ’90s. Maybe the thing he needs right now is to get away from Johnny Depp collaborations and CGI/motion-capture effects, and step back into a world from his brilliant past.

What do you think, could Beetlejuice II actually happen and would it be worth making?

  2. YES DO IT! Don’t let morons say that its not a good idea. Seriously, who cares what age micheal keaton & geena davis are along with the other cast. Trust me, the beetljuice franchise is still welcome to come back to the big screen. I mean, c’mon we’ve had Indiana Jones 4, Rambo 4, Die Hard 4, hopefuly a Ghostbusters 3 and both bruce willis and harrison ford are coming back for a Indiana Jones 5 & Die Hard 5. As far as im concerned, AGE DOES’NT MATTER!! BEETLJUICE FOREVER YEEEAH!!

  3. They’ve got to come up with something better than that Hawaii Vacation though.

  4. Corza2010: all the movies you’ve listed in your defense FOR Beetlejuice 2 movie SUCKED. There are actor’s APOLOGIZING for these movies.

Leave Beetlejuice alone. The detriments outweigh the benefits. Jeffery Jones is dead, Winona Ryder is living in a ditch, and everyone else associated with the movie LOOKS LIKE ASS except for Michael Keaton – who I love, but without Tim Burton at the helm, would be doing a great injustice to any idea of a new film.

Long story short, B2 would need a new family, new characters to invest in because 1. the old cast would be ask for TOO MUCH MONEY and 2. OLD ACTORS DON’T BRING IN YOUNG AUDIENCES.

    Next.

  11. It would be FANTASTIC if they could make a Beetlejuice 2, I don’t really care if it’s a new or old family…….as long as it’s the same old perverted, crazy, foul-mouthed, trickster/mastermind Beetlejuice then shoot.
    GO BEETLEJUICE!!!!!!!

    Comment by Naomi — September 2, 2010 @ 5:41 am

  12. Would love to see it, but please don’t do Hawaii! That’s such an uninspired idea. Have a fan contest for plot lines to bring in some new ideas. Anything would be better than the Hawaiian thing.

  14. HELL YES!!! DOOOO ITTTT

    Comment by GK — November 7, 2010 @ 10:57 am

  15. Jump on that before they all end up in the nursing home. 20 some years was way to long to wait. Beetlejuice all the way. Keep all the same actors though. Cannot stand these remakes these days. They mess up everything. We need good wholesome movies that speak to the soul instead of these cheesy films these days.

  16. Jesus on a Stick YES! i grew up on this movie-litteraly! it came out the year before i was born. Tim Burton and the other two actors need to climb on board and get this thing going, because, lets face it, even if it’s aweful, well love it, because that’s just the way fans are. Totally 100% behind this idea. i say, start a pettition and let the bugging begin until we get it!

  17. I would love a Beetlejuice 2 and originally I would have liked to see all the actors return and reprise their roles but Jeffrey Jones would have to be taken off the list. For those of you who do not know Jeffrey was arrested back in 03 for taking nude photos of a little boy and has admitted to doing so.

    Comment by Jason Hyland — February 4, 2013 @ 5:37 pm

  18. JEFEERY JONES is very much ALIVE. B2 would be awesome. get the facts before you speak…
