Comic Review: Revolver

By Matt Kindt
Vertigo Comics
Release Date July 14, 2010

Are you looking for the next Asterios Polyp, I Kill Giants, or Essex County to enjoy? Well I found that book for you and it’s called Revolver. Revolver comes to you from the acclaimed author of 3 Story: The Secret History of the Giant Man and Super Spy: The Lost Dossiers, Matt Kindt. If you haven’t read anything by Kindt, then you should definitely check something out. Kindt is one of my favorite authors and is great with creator-owned material.

Revolver is an original graphic novel about a character named Sam whose life is somehow split into two different realities. One life is normal and filled with routine, while the other is set in a post-apocalyptic world where he has to fight to survive. One of the most interesting parts of the story is how Sam deals with the worlds and how his psyche deals with it as well. The story definitely has a lot of twists and turns and I definitely don’t want to spoil the book for anyone by revealing any further details.

The genius of this work by Kindt is not only the story, which is amazing, but I really could not be more impressed by the format. I really can’t imagine how much work it would have taken to do what Kindt has done with this wonderful piece of work. Each page has news bulletins sprawled across the bottom with a number that delineates the page number but also relates to what is happening on that page. This is actually what interested me originally when seeing the preview for Revolver in other Vertigo books.

This attention to detail along with the beautiful monochromatic art really makes the book stand out. I can’t say black and white, because there are certain sections of the book that are also different colors and different shades of those colors. I really can’t get enough of this and the style of storytelling Kindt uses throughout the book. Overall this is one of the most interesting graphic novels I have read all year and I would definitely suggest it to anyone looking for something good to read.

If you are looking for a good Indie book or even just a good story at all, you should definitely pick up Revolver and check it out. It shows how passion and love for storytelling can shine and make a compelling tale of intrigue with a little bit of science mixed in. It makes you care about the characters as well as wonder how two different worlds could co-exist without driving Sam insane.

I give Revolver a 5 out of 5.
