UPDATED! ‘Mad Men’ Star January Jones Replaces Alice Eve As Emma Frost In ‘X-Men: First Class’

For a long while, She’s Out of My League star Alice Eve was expected to play Emma Frost in the movie adaptation of comic book series X-Men: First Class. As it turns out, that deal was never sealed with ink and now comes word that a new actress will be taking on the role.

Deadline reports that Mad Men beauty January Jones will instead be taking on the part of the White Queen in director Matthew Vaughn‘s movie. The two-time Golden Globe nominated actress has also appeared in movies like American Wedding, We Are Marshall, and Pirate Radio.

Some other smaller castings for the movie have also been revealed as well. The most notable of these is Zoe Kravitz, who is set to play a younger Angel. This is odd because Angel has always been a male character, played in X-Men: The Last Stand by Ben Foster.

Rounding out the smaller casting, Bill Milner has been brought on to play an even younger version of the young Magneto that Michael Fassbender will play for the majority of the film; and Morgan Lilly will play a young version of Raven.

Production on X-Men: First Class is set to begin in the coming days, with a few more roles still expected to be cast. All of the new actors join recent additions Oliver Platt as The Man in Black, Rose Byrne as mutant expert and Professor Xavier (James McAvoy) love interest Moira MacTaggert, and Kevin Bacon as a still-unknown villain.

UPDATE: Comic Book Movie has discovered that the reason for Alice Eve not getting the Emma Frost role was per her own request. Apparently some changes were made to the script (perhaps victim of Vaughn’s Inception-inspired changes?) that left her unhappy with the way things were going, and led her to request a departure from the project.

  1. I’ve been an X-Men fan since I was 4 years old. I loved the first movie and loved the second even more. Unfortunately, this movie seems like it has the potential to be a lot like X3 and Spiderman 3. Throwing in a lot of new characters and a lot of new story lines that true fans won’t grab on to isn’t the way to do it. They can’t call this movie “First Class” and have second class characters.

Don’t get me wrong though, it has potential with Fassbender, McAvoy and Matt Vaughn. But I just don’t think that will be enough to make this movie worthy in the end. Marvel was starting to move into the higher echelon of comic adaptations but I think this movie will throw it back into the dumps with Daredevil, Elektra, X3, Wolverine, etc.

  2. What genius decided to change the gender of a canon character ? Angel is a male character and should remain such.

  3. Actually, She’s playing TEMPEST. Angel Salvadore is the char. name.
Settle down, that would be an insult. Not to make angel a woman, but to make angel the child of the man that tormented my eardrums and brought us “fly away” a decade ago. and Lisa bonet.
