Jesus is back and he’s ready for his final showdown with the angel Gabriel and his army of the undead. Yes, Jesus is ready to take on the undead hordes, and he’s brought his pal Abraham Lincoln along with him. Okay, this all sounds crazy, but that’s the best thing about Jesus Hates Zombies featuring Lincoln Hates Werewolves in Yea, Though I Walk Volume 4 (see, even the title is insane).

For a book called Jesus Hates Zombies, this is not nearly as blasphemous as you might think it would be. Writer Stephen Lindsay does not make fun of Jesus; he doesn’t even really make fun of Christians (which would be an easy way for a weaker writer to go). He just wants to tell a goofy but fun zombie story. Sure, it may have a few more religious trappings than other zombie books, but Lindsay’s goal is not really to examine religion. You can tell when a writer is being mean towards religion, and I never get that feeling from this book. This is an action movie, complete with explosions and epic fights.

The art on this book is very unique, and while it lacks a certain polish that I generally look for, it’s still enjoyable. Artist Daniel Thollin has improved over the course of the previous two volumes (Steve Cobb having drawn the first volume). With Volume 4, Thollin has lost the annoying habit of over-shadowing around the eyes and making the art on a whole darker than it needs to be. He draws the action well though, and he’s got a great look to his monsters. There is still some room for growth, but looking over the last 180 some pages of work that he has done on the series, you can see an artist improving and finding his artistic voice.

This is a fun series so far, and judging by the preview for the next installment in the back of this one, we’re in for even more fun in the next series. No, it’s not serious. Yes, there is a lot of fun to be had in this series. Yes, this is an indie series worth checking out if you have a sense of humor and are looking for something that doesn’t take itself too seriously. The last four volumes of this series have been fun and I’m looking forward to what happens next. This volume gets a 3 out of 5 from me. If it sounds like fun you too, make sure you order the Yea, Though I Walk omnibus, which will be in stores in the next few months.
