TV Series Based On James Cameron’s ‘True Lies’ Coming To ABC

Recently it was reported that James Cameron was adapting his own action spy movie, True Lies, into a TV series, and that it would soon be presented to networks.

It didn’t take long to impress and sell a network on the concept; it’s being reported that ABC has landed a deal on the True Lies series, which Cameron will act as an executive producer on, and René Echevarria will write and handle the day-to-day operations on. ABC tried to go down the spy TV road before with an attempt to turn Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith into a series, but that didn’t work out. They’re also currently developing a new Charlie’s Angels series, as well.

For those who have not seen it (and you really should), True Lies tells the story of your average guy named Harry (Arnold Schwarzenegger), who seemingly leads a normal, boring life. He’s been married to his wife Helen (Jamie Lee Curtis) for a long while and their romance has become stale, they have a teen daughter named Dana (Eliza Dushku) who hates them, and he works at an office as a computer salesman. The catch to all of this, unbeknownst to his family, is that he’s actually a top spy for a secret government agency.

No word on whether the TV series will follow the same Harry Tasker character with a new actor or just use the basic super spy living a double-life premise. ABC will have to see how things go and decide if they want to push forward with this before more details are made available. There is the chance that things won’t work out and the series will be halted, but with word that the deal comes with a big penalty, you have to think that ABC wants to make this happen.

For a long time now, a sequel to True Lies has been rumored with the original cast returning, and it’s unclear whether this new TV series being adapted by Cameron himself kills off any chance of that happening. If so, I for one will not be happy; this is my personal favorite James Cameron movie and a sequel is miles and miles more appealing to me than an ABC TV show.

What do you think about a True Lies TV series?

  1. Anyone else notice the spy meme that’s been ratcheted up lately with all these new shows and movies? Seems more so than in recent history. I’ll probably be skipping this one.

  2. I like the movie so if they decide to go forward with it I will give it a chance.

  3. Someone please explain to me why Chuck fans have to scramble to gather viewers to keep Chuck on the air, and then the networks (even NBC itself with UnderCovers) start cranking out spy shows? How about just commit to the currently effective and enjoyable spy shows already on the air instead of “Chuck with African Americans” or “Chuck where he’s married” or “Chuck but FBI instead of CIA.”????
