A group of actors have been assembled to voice roles in Tim Burton‘s feature adaptation of his own short film, Frankenweenie.

And as for the names joining the film, they’re all familiar with the ways of Burton. The first four voices signed include Martin Landau, who appeared in the director’s Ed Wood and provided a voice in the Burton-produced 9; Winona Ryder, who starred in both Edward Scissorhands and Beetlejuice; Catherine O’Hara, who also starred in Beetlejuice and offered her voice for The Nightmare Before Christmas, and Martin Short, who was one of the many stars in Mars Attacks!, will both be voicing five different characters each.

Burton first made the short film in 1984, which told the story of a man whose dog is hit by a car and killed. Instead of mourning his loss, he decides to re-animate the animal much along the same lines as the classic tale of Frankenstein. The short was filmed in a live-action black and white style (you can watch it here), but this time around he’ll use his stop-motion animation talents to bring his story to the big screen.

Frankenweenie is being written by John August, who has previously scripted everything from Go, Titan A.E., and Charlie’s Angels, to Burton’s Big Fish, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Corpse Bride. The movie is currently set for a March 9, 2012 release date.
