Rumors of a new sequel to Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure and Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey have been floating around for quite a while now, but it didn’t seem like anyone believed it would actually happen.
As of late, talks have seemed to heat up about the possible third chapter, and now stars Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter have confirmed that they are in fact developing the movie. This doesn’t mean it will definitely happen, of course, but it does sound like they’re moving in the right direction.
While talking to MTV after Reeves had stated they were working on Bill & Ted 3, Winter elaborated, explaining that the duo have been figuring out ideas for the movie for a long time now but that they didn’t want to move forward with it unless it could be done properly. He went on to share that Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon are currently working on the script, but until it was completed and they could all sit down and see where things stood, nothing is official.
When talking about what exactly they were going for in terms of staying true to the originals and not messing it all up, Winter said:
The essence of what we’ve always wanted to do is to make a ‘Bill & Ted’ movie. We don’t want to make a cynical ‘here’s Bill and Ted “” you guys are our kids, now YOU guys go be Bill and Ted and the franchise can live for another 25 years!’ It’s not that. It’s a straight up, what’s the funniest and most surprising take on where Bill and Ted would be right now if we stopped back in on them? That’s what we’re doing.
Then the subject of what they would do about the late, great George Carlin and his character of Rufus came up. When asked whether they would try to recast him or what their plan would be in handling that, Winter made it very clear:
That would be horrible. That’s the thing about the movies “” they’re personality-based. It’s Reeves’ personality when he’s doing comedy, it’s my personality and it was George’s personality. It doesn’t really work when you’re pretending that other people are those people, because there’s just not that much there [otherwise]. No, we’re definitely not going to recast Rufus.
We’re working our way through it right now. It’s really complicated. He was such a big part of the spirit of the originals, and we’ve been trying to be clever about making a new one that can handle the Carlin issue. It’s actually stopped us in the past “” why do it without Rufus? We’ve been delicate about moving around him.
As for when we might see the movie happen, again, they need to make sure everything is in order when the script is complete and everyone will go from there. If all goes smoothly with the script, then it’s all about working out schedules and trying to make the production process work.
At the moment, another Bill & Ted is still in the early stages and needs a lot of work to see life. Still, this seemed crazy not too long ago, and now it sounds like it might really be happening.
