It’s been a rough time in the world of stand-up comedy lately. First came the news that Robert Schimmel had passed away due to injuries from a car accident, and now it’s being reported that Greg Giraldo has died after an overdose on prescription medications. He was 44 years old.
The overdose occurred last weekend, and the comedian was discovered by a friend before being brought to a hospital in New Jersey where he was listed in critical but stable condition. Sources also stated that the overdose was not any form of suicide attempt.
Giraldo has been around for a while now, making many appearances in comedy specials, TV shows, and movies. He’s best known for his work on the many Comedy Central roasts, where he was one of the staples who was always there to unleash a barrage of insults, harsh as the ears can take and stomach burning hilarious. He took part in the Roast of David Hasselhoff just a month or so ago. He was also just recently one of the three judges of this past season of Last Comic Standing, where a lot of people who might not have known him were able to get better acquainted.
My personal favorite work of Giraldo’s is the first thing I heard him do. Many of you might be very familiar with it, it’s a little spoken word song called Underwear Goes Inside The Pants by Lazyboy, which is one of the funniest commentaries you’ll hear, delivered by Giraldo himself. If you haven’t heard it, just do a quick search and you should find it.
dammit..i feel like i was just punched in the face…this man was great funny as hell..and representing for Latinos..im at a lost for words..rest in peace Giraldo..
