Fox Wants ‘Glee’ Creator To Direct ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’ Remake
  |  @   |

It looks like Fox 2000 is moving forward with their plans for a remake of the cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and they want Glee creator Ryan Murphy to helm it.

Nothing has been signed yet, but apparently the studio is “courting” Murphy, and he’s met with the studio regarding the project.

The studio’s interest in Murphy should be no surprise, as he’s just completed a Halloween-theme episode of the Fox television series Glee in which the gang does a performance of Rocky Horror, the long-running horror-scifi musical celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. The episode airs on October 26, 2010 and promises to be quite good.

It was announced back in July 2008 that Fox and MTV productions were planning a remake of the highly successful 1975 film, and would be using the original screenplay, written by Richard O’Brien and Jim Sharman, as a guide and possibly include music not featured in the original (Read MTV To Remake “˜The Rocky Horror Picture Show’). Since then, there’s been little word on the project and it was even rumored last year that MTV had shelved it.

I’m guessing Murphy did quite a job on that Glee episode for Fox to want him for this remake. I’m still trying to figure out WHY they want to remake The Rocky Horror Picture Show at all. The 1975 film still plays in theaters til this day, it’s the longest-running theatrical release in film history, and it’s grossed over $100 million. I’m sure Fox thinks it can strike gold twice, but I can’t imagine a remake having the same impact as the original. I guess we’ll see a glimpse of what Murphy can do with this property once the Glee episode airs.

Aside from Glee, Murphy also created the FX series Nip/Tuck, and directed and wrote the screenplay for the Julia Roberts film Eat Pray Love released this summer.

  1. I still really do not want this to happen, no one could do a better job then Tim Curry in that role, unless they find someone new and never heard of maybe.
That said I do love to watch the different stage shows here, and am quite happy Richard O’Brien is in this coming up one as the Narrator, as so long as he’s involved it’s generally good.
It would be nice if they did some casting calls in NZ for the film

  3. This is the most ridiculous thing I’ve read. A remake of RHPS? If Hollywood can’t come up with an original idea then just stop making new movies and re-release good movies so we can go see them again on the big screen.
