New Artwork Shows ‘What If’ The Avengers Existed Centuries Ago
  |  @   |

Francisco Francavilla, formerly the artist for books such as Zorro and soon to be artist on Black Panther: Man Without Fear for Marvel as well as the Commissioner Gordon backups in Detective Comics for DC, has presented a unique vision of an Avengers team from the Dark Ages.

Posted on the Comic Twart blog for their Marvel “What If” week, the sepia-toned cover image — which has the title The Avengers: Earth’s First Heroes — shows what four of the Avengers might look like if they were around a few hundred years ago.

Francavilla said the artwork was inspired by an old pitch idea he had for a Marvel “What If” story, and described the scenario as the Avengers fighting “evils and undead armies.”

So I give you, for the first time I think, Hulk the Druid (a celtic primeval force of nature), Captain Amerigo (from the New World), Thor himself, and an unknown mysterious clad-armored gladiator known as Iron Man. Together they are The AVENGERS, EARTH’s FIRST HEROES and they fight evils and undead armies. How does that sound? :)

Pretty cool, huh? It’s too bad this is just a sketch piece and not an actual comic (though Francavilla did say he planned on posting a color version of the cover soon). Imagine Brian Wood taking all his Northlanders research and applying it to the Avengers. That would be a book I would line up for. But, I guess we’ll just have to write the story in our own heads.

  1. That is pretty cool. I kind of chuckled when I got to “and Thor as himself” seems like he kind of got robbed at first but then I remembered he is the God of Thunder and then it seemed like the others got short changed.
Iron Man isn’t so impressive. I imagine if he was alive and working back then he would probably be the most impressive blacksmith the world had seen and would be in something much more impressive.
