Get Derezzed With A Taste Of Daft Punk’s ‘Tron: Legacy’ Score
  |

When all is said and done Tron: Legacy is going to be the movie of the year for me, regardless of whether or not it lives up to its boundless potential or the exciting previews that have been trickling out of the Mouse House’s mighty marketing division.

The original 1982 Tron is one of my personal favorite films of all time; I love just about everything about it, from the performances to the snappy writing to the musical score by Wendy Carlos (with awesome contributions from Journey) to the spectacular visual effects which gave the film a look that has and always be ahead of its time.

There’s a timeless, ethereal beauty to the computerized world of Tron that could never be dated in my mind and only grows as a cinematic work of art with each passing year as most video game-based and influenced films seem to embrace a grittier look deprived of any sense of wonder or imagination. It’s an absolutely perfect film to me so the idea of a sequel emerging nearly three decades after the release of the original both excites me and fills me with dread.

Like any E-ticket blockbuster this one could go either way. Ever since production of the film kicked off several years ago, the filmmakers, led by new director Joseph Kosinski (original writer-director Steven Lisberger, who had to shake the pillars of Heaven to get the 1982 film made, has stayed on as a producer), have made a lot of great creative decisions in the making of Tron: Legacy. These decisions include evolving the look of the computer world without removing its retroactive beauty, and bringing in the French electronica duo, Daft Punk, to compose the film’s score.

Samples of the original score for Tron: Legacy have been widely available for months now, but as part of their “Tron Tuesdays” weekly media event to promote the impending release of the film Walt Disney Studios has released a music video set to Daft Punk’s composition “Derezzed”. The clip is little more than a brief montage of scenes from Tron: Legacy, most of them from previously released trailers, and runs less than two minutes but you may catch something in this video that you haven’t seen before as I did…and the music sounds great.

There are two versions of the “Derezzed” video floating around out there, one that was made available on Walt Disney Studios Benelux’s YouTube channel. There’s also an alternate music montage version. You can check out both below!

“Change the scheme, alter the mood, electrify the boys and girls if you’d be so kind!”

Tron: Legacy opens on December 17, 2010. I shall be seeing this sucker in IMAX 3D!
