‘Doctor Who’ Christmas Special To Air In The US On Christmas Day

Doctor WhoBBC America has announced via Twitter the news that American Doctor Who fans have been waiting to hear: Yes, we will be getting the Doctor Who Christmas Special, and it will be broadcast on December 25!

The Christmas Special, which is entitled A Christmas Carol, is written by show runner Steven Moffat and directed by Toby Haynes. As expected, Matt Smith will be starring as the Eleventh Doctor, and Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill will be reprising their roles as Amy Pond and Rory Williams (Mr. Pond!) respectively.

Interestingly, this will be the first time in Who history that Doctor Who Christmas Special has aired in both the UK and the USA on the same day. When interviewed previously about what fans can expect with A Christmas Carol, Steven Moffat remarked that, “We’re going for broke with this one. It’s all your favorite Christmas movies at once, in an hour, with monsters and the Doctor and a honeymoon and – oh, you’ll see.” He has also been quoted as saying that this one will be the “Christmassy Christmas special ever.”

In other Doctor Who-related news, Moffat also revealed that the mysteries surrounding the character of River Song will most definitely be explained and unveiled during Series 6. “You will find out who she is and what’s going on and how it all makes sense,” Moffat said. “And that will explain a number of things. I’m writing the episode right now where The Doctor finds out who she is. We’re not just going to endlessly tease.” Alex Kingston will be reprising her role as River Song in the next series, and will also be appearing in the episodes that will be set in the United States.

Also worthy of note in some recent Doctor Who chatter online, was an interview conducted with former Doctor Who show runner and current Torchwood show runner Russell T. Davies by IGN, in which he confirmed that there is hope for another Doctor Who/Torchwood crossover some day. Davies and Moffat have reportedly been keeping in contact about what their plans are in the Whoniverse, and from a continuity standpoint, this has some fans quite relieved. “Well, Steven said he’d love to see [Captain] Jack [Harkness] in Doctor Who,” said Davies. “So if Steven says that, Steven will make it happen, I would think. That’s not inside information, but I bet one day it will happen. I’d love to see it. It would be marvelous.”

So, some interesting developments in the world of Doctor Who: U.S. gets the Christmas Special on Christmas Day; River Song’s secrets revealed; and Russell T. Davies discussing the future possibility of more of Captain Jack Harkness meeting the Doctor. It sounds like the upcoming episodes of Doctor Who are going to be highly anticipated!

On a final note, Doctor Who fans may be interested in checking out Geeks Of Doom’s very own podcast dedicated to Time Lord brilliance: the TARDISblend. On an upcoming episode, we will be discussing all of these news developments and will be looking back at the current Sarah Jane Adventures series and the release of the Doctor Who Series 5 DVD box set.
