Geek Art: ‘Empire Strikes Back’ 30th Anniversary Artwork – ‘I Love You…I Know’
  |  @   |

I love you… I know.

Does this have any significance to you?

Yes? Cool, because you’ll love this new limited edition art print currently being sold exclusively through the official Star Wars Shop.

Artist Amy Beth Christenson, of LucasArts, created this piece titled “I Love You…I Know” and it’s the ninth of twelve prints in a special monthly limited art collection to celebrate the 30th anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back.

The artwork captures the scene from Empire in the carbon-freezing chamber between Han Solo and Princess Leia as they are about to kiss, just before Han is lowered into the carbonite. In one of the greatest lines in the film, and without a doubt, one of the most memorable romantic parting words on screen, Leia finally confesses her love for Han. “I love you,” Leia tells Han. And this scoundrel’s reply? “I know.”

A wonderful aspect of this print is that not only do we get Han and Leia at the forefront, but behind the doomed lovers stand Chewbacca with the dismantled C-3PO on his back on the left, with Darth Vader and Boba Fett on the right.

This was always one of my favorites scenes, and still is. Even though the Rebels are seemingly defeated, Leia’s admission of love, combined with the fact that Han maintained his cool even til the end, always put a smile on my face and when I first saw the film, it gave me hope that everything would work out all right.

Actor Harrison Ford, who played Han Solo in the original Star Wars film trilogy, said that he ad-libbed the famous line, feeling it was more in line with the character, though creator George Lucas was convinced the comeback wouldn’t sit well with audiences. Obviously, it did, because it still gets a good laugh all these years later.

To learn more about the artist’s thoughts on the print, check out the official Star Wars site’s interview with Christenson.

What do you guys think of this print?
