Syfy To Begin Making Movies With Universal Pictures

The Movie God   |  @   |

Syfy is best known for their science fiction TV series like Battlestar Galactica and Caprica, as well as their unexplained phenomena shows like Ghost Hunters and Destination Truth. They’re also known for some of the (intentionally) worst TV movies you’ll ever lay eyes on, like Sharktopus and Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus.

Now comes word that Syfy, who belongs to NBC Universal, will be teaming up with Universal Pictures to step into the realms of feature films with their new venture, Syfy Films. The plan is to produce one or two new movies each year with small to moderate budgets ranging from $5 million to $25 million.

Movies produced will not be restricted to just science fiction, either; other genres including fantasy, horror, and supernatural are all expected to see some love when things get going. The first of the new Syfy Films/Universal Pictures joint venture projects is expected some time in the year 2012.

For those of you thinking “Hey, Universal was the studio that released Serenity! Will this mean more?!” The answer is no; no it will not. At the moment, the only goal is to make brand new titles and potential franchises, so comebacks seem highly unlikely. Besides, we all know that a return of Firefly on TV or maybe even direct-to-DVD movies would be the best bet, not major releases…though the lower budgets would be

This also means that Syfy Films will not be involved in the announced Universal Battlestar Galactica movie, which we found out in August of 2009 that Bryan Singer was developing with a chance of also directing.

  1. Why would anyone continue to invest any time in watching anything on SyFy? Their track record of canceling quality shows is deplorable.

  2. Perhaps but their track record of creating unwatchable made for tv movies with downright awful CG effects is pretty good! LOL Does anyone think Sci-Fi Film’s involvement will drag Universal Pictures down, or that Universal Pictures involvement will improve Sci-Fi Film’s production value?

  3. They may make some of the worse movies in history but who can deny that names like Frankenfish and my personal favorite Mansquito are anything other than artistic gold? :D

  4. Harsh as I may’ve seemed earlier, I still drop by my parents house to watch with my mom on occasion (I grew up watching TNT MonsterVision on Saturdays instead of cartoons like everyone else). Sharktopus wasn’t sooo bad. Mega-Pirahna was dreadful but had some laughable scenes that made it worthwhile (like the hero on his back, kicking giant man-sized piranha in the heads while they’re trying to eat him). The aforementioned Mansquito! But there have been some REAL stinkers too: Ogre, Bird Flu Horror, Mammoth, blah. So very hit or miss. I think the “monster” movies have 50/50 chance of being watchable…”end of the world”/devastation-like flicks are OK…the sword/sorcery/magic themed movies are just boring mostly. I start all of these movies with low expectations, knowing that the military uniforms will be mismatched, the CG will likely appear cartoony, that “America” looks very similar to eastern Europe, and that the lead actors probably reached the height of popularity as B-movie action stars from the 90s (Lorenzo Llamas?). But every once in a while, one of these movies surprises me or is so horrible that it’s fun to watch and talk about at work! I worry that the deal with Universal might ruin what passes for a “Sci-Fi Channel Original” these days. Will production value go up so that even the cheesiness isn’t fun anymore? I hope not!
