Marvel Brings ‘Alias’ Comic to TV With ‘AKA Jessica Jones’

AliasABC has already revealed plans for a new Incredible Hulk TV show, as well as a Cloak and Dagger series (for ABC Family), and now they have announce the third series planned to run on the network.

The series will be AKA Jessica Jones, based on the Marvel comics series Alias. Alias was written by Brian Michael Bendis and featured art by Michael Gaydos. The show will be written and executive produced by Melissa Rosenberg, screenwriter for the Twilight movies, as well as a former executive producer on Dexter. Joining her as executive producers will be Marvel TV Head Jeph Loeb, Marvel Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada, and Marvel Worldwide’s Alan Fine. Bendis will help out the show as a consultant, and one can only hope that that he’s tasked with writing for the show (unless, we lose him to TV as we lost Brian K. Vaughn to Lost, in which case they should keep him away from the writer’s room).

First reported by Variety, AKA Jessica Jones follows Jones, a former super-hero turned private investigator. Jones first appeared as a character in Alias, a book which was part of Marvel’s MAX line of mature rated books. Jones as a character has gone on to have a big role in the comics world, specifically in New Avengers, where she is now married to Luke Cage. The book (which I have actually never gotten around to reading, shame on me) dealt with a lot of serious subjects, but still had a lot of Bendis’ trademark humor. I’m sure fans of the comic book series will be interested to see how the tone of the book is carried over to the show. Part of the whole point of the series was its more mature look at the dark, seedy underbelly of the Marvel Universe, and I’m curious to see how that is translated, or if ABC will use this to introduce some of Marvel’s lesser known (to mainstream audiences) characters, much like Smallville did with Green Arrow. Could we eventually see a Luke Cage spin-off (assuming he appears in the TV show)? It would certainly be cool if Marvel used this show to expose some of its street level characters to a wider audience.

AKA Jessica Jones makes sense as a new title, since clearly ABC couldn’t use the title of the original comic, Alias, what with the Jennifer Garner spy series with the same title still somewhat fresh in mainstream viewer’s minds. I kind of like the title, with it being a play on the term Alias. You knew they would have to change the title, and I think they found a good way to do it.

So fans of the comic, does this make you happy or worried? Will ABC have to tone the content down so much that it no longer resembles the source material? Or is it possible to maintain the tone enough to keep intact? Is there any actress that stands out to you as an obvious Jessica Jones, or do they need to find an unknown? With what could be a lower effects budget than Incredible Hulk or Cloak and Dagger, and with what Variety says is a deal that is very close to complete, this could end up being the first Marvel live-action show that we see emerge from the new Marvel/Disney partnership, so we’ll have to keep an eye on this one.

  1. should be good.

I’ll start worrying if Loeb tries to write for it.

  2. Ok, so I have not read the comic so I do not know the source material. What worries me is the networks ability to have any semblance of darkness since it prides it’s self on being a family network. Not always networks don’t usually push their boundaries too far.
