‘You Can’t Stop Rock And Roll’ Or ‘Rock And Roll Is Dead’: Where Do You Stand?
  |

A debate has caught fire in the UK over the current state of rock music.

This all began with an article on The Guardian claiming that because rock music has seen a significant drop in singles sales recently, and with hip hop and pop growing in popularity, that rock is effectively a dead scene.

This has caused quite a stir.

It is a claim made before by, among others, Lenny Kravitz and the Swedish garage band the Hellacopters. But today, after years of struggle, came evidence to support the fearsome claim: rock’n’roll is dead.

Since this was posted, journalists at Rock Sound and Classic Rock magazines have posted counter-arguments claiming that rock is in fact as healthy as it ever was and continues to grow. Radio shows, newspapers, and forums are abuzz in the UK with fans and musicians rubbishing any such claims that rock music would ever die. Indeed, tours by rock bands constantly register in the top 10 selling concerts lists and albums by rock artists sell consistently well.

So, geek music fans, what do you think – is rock music dead, or will rock never die?

  1. This truly is a farsical statement. Rock ‘n’ Roll is as far from dead as can be. Yes, rock ‘n’ roll stars are closer to their death than ever before, the stones, AC/DC being examples. But its not them, the mick jaggers, the angus youngs that are rock ‘n’ roll. They are simply the original distributers of rock n roll. The inspiration for rock ‘n’ roll. The Muses to modern day rock ‘n’ roll!.

Rock ‘n’ Roll lives in the heart of modern music, be it hip hop or pop. Take the sheer attitude and swagger that Lady Gaga parades around with as one pure example of Rock ‘n’ Roll in a modern pop Icon. Rhianna to boot releasing a rock remix album in the states in 2010 including Slash!

Rock ‘n’ Roll will never die!

  2. Don’t care, I listen mostly to thrash, death, or prog. Those genres seem to put out more stuff in recent years than I can listen to :)

  4. IF rock n roll is dead then how come bands like Guns n Roses can still get to number 2 in the album charts or an ablum not really advertised by Slash (&friends) still gets to number 17? And that’s not including the downloads! Not to mention how mainly rock orientated festivals/gigs sell out FAR to quickly. PLUS rock is being mixed and mashed up into all sorts of strange combinations (e.g. Glee *I feel dirty typing that*).
Perfect example; Dave Grohl. Foo Fighters are a still major player in the current rock game with over 16yrs of music. Their newest album may be just around the corner but just look at the last: Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace. It reached number one in the UK charts (not to mention many others) and the single ‘The Pretender’ reached number no. 8. The man has been a key ingredient in amazing “super” groups such as Probot and currently Them Crooked Vultures. He has played drums on high selling albums like Queens of The Stone Age “Songs For The Deaf” (reached number 4) and Tenacious D’s self titled first album (Which only got to number 38 but you show me one person who doesn’t try and sing ‘Tribute’ when drunk). And this is just one man! I could continue this with so many different rock band/musicians; Mike Patton, Linkin Park/Jay-Z, Daryl Palumbo etc.

Just because it’s not screaming at everyone in their beds surely doesn’t mean it’s dead, it has just become part ninja; sneak attacking you when you least expect it or there when you are ready to want it.

  5. Just read the article on rock sound and 30 Seconds to Mars are not a Rock band. They are a boring corporate pop/indie band and they suck. Let’s be more careful about who we class as rock bands people.

  6. Trolling in newspapers now eh? Rock has been around, and will always be around forever.

Corps keep trying to brainwash people and push that rnb and pop junk, but they know it and we do too…. rock is still the winner.
