CBS Renews ‘Big Bang Theory’ Through 2014

SheldonCBS announced a deal to renew hit sitcom The Big Bang Theory for another three years through the 2013-14 television season.

The show, which stars Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki, Simon Helberg, Kunal Nayyar, and Kaley Cuoco, has always been a hit with geeks for its witty, scientifically accurate dialog, and frequent references to pop culture. However, the last season has seen a huge ratings boost coupled with more media attention — making a long-term renewal a no-brainer for the studio.

It also helps that 2010 was a particularly good year for Parsons, whose portrayal of Sheldon Cooper won not only a 2010 Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series but also a Golden Globe win this year for Best Performance by an Actor in a TV Series, Comedy or Musical.

If you’ve neglected to watch Big Bang Theory in the past, I completely understand as I’ve never been a fan of sitcoms and even less a fan of any program that features a laugh-track. Yet, much like I casually gave The IT Crowd a try, I am now hooked on Big Bang Theory.

Anyone else extremely excited to hear the news that this show will be around well into the future?

  1. IDK where you get your wrong information, but The Big Bang Theory is taped in front of a live studio audience.

  2. They use the live audience laughter, but there’s ALSO a laugh track.

  3. My mate raves about The Big Bang Theory. But I’m not really a fan of sitcoms these days either but I am a fan of The IT Crowd and was a big fan of Spaced. May borrow my mate’s BBT DVD’s and give it a go.

  4. @alEX – Like Eve said, live audience plus a laugh track added in post production. I appreciate you being a stickler though. I should have mentioned that in the article.

  5. Why do all the mediocre garbage shows keep being renewed? it’s not even funny.

  6. The flagship Hollywood motion picture film studios have in the past produced many entertaining movies based on nerd and geek characters. I had no problem with that, infact I support good comedy. However, my gripe with the Big bang Theory CBS was “Paris Hilton” impersonator Kaley Cuoco’s attitude and behaviour at the 2009 Comic Con. The stunt she pulled “Flirting with the fan” This was an attempt to give reassurance to her hardcore male fan base that she had no interest in nerds or geeks. kaley Cuoco cannot have her cake and eat it. It is obvious that she will feel more in her comfort zone working with the likes of Nick Carter or Russell Brand. I had been the shows biggest supporter up to that point. I was naive to have believed Bill Prady’s press statements that the premise of BBT was to celebrate nerds and not to mock them. It became apparent to me that Prady’s statements were based on studio spin. It is commom knowledge that when launching or promoting a brand, most public relation experts will advise you to be cautious not to contradict your brand, as you will leave yourself wide open to public scrutiny and ridicule. Chuck lorre and bill Prady the grand old dukes of spn. It will sooner or later become apparent to Chuck Lorre Productions, CBS and Warner Bros that spin is only effective up to a certain point, depending on who your target audiences are. Sophisticated audiences can smell a rotten egg from a far distance.
