Ricky Gervais Banished From All Things Golden Globes, Including Future Nominations?
  |  @   |

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is at it again, folks.

Just one night after putting on yet another mediocre-yet-entertaining ceremony, it sounds like the organization behind the awards has minimal sense of humor, and wants to punish the best part about their show of the last two years: the host.

Last year, Ricky Gervais made his hosting debut at the Golden Globe Awards, and pushed so many buttons that many (myself included) thought that they would never bring him back. Shockingly, they quickly announced that Gervais would be back again, showing that they’re okay with some comic jabs. Of course Gervais would have to up the ante this year, and that he did…but apparently he crossed the “line.”

Click on over for a quote from a Hollywood Foreign Press member, and to see a video of the Gervais opening monologue that has celebrities and suits so very bitter this fine day.

Speaking to Pop Eater last night, a member of the HFPA had this to say:

Ricky will not be invited back to host the show next year, for sure.

For sure any movie he makes he can forget about getting nominated. He humiliated the organization last night and went too far with several celebrities whose representatives have already called to complain.

The main reason this quote was made is for one particular joke, which took big shots at both The Tourist and the HFPA being bribed into nominating certain films and stars. The only problem with this — and it’s WHY Gervais is so good — is that they’re 100% true. The more public these disgraceful tactics of the HFPA are, the more likely they’re stop making fools of themselves and nominate the films and stars that DESERVE it. I love me some Johnny Depp, but the fact that The Tourist was nominated was shocking to anyone who knows anything about movies. It was so clearly out of place, controversy was oozing before we were even told things were a bit fishy. And it was not the only nominee to cause some confusion.

These people are renowned for being bribed, and it’s why no one takes their awards seriously anymore. The Golden Globes are really just a potential stepping stone to Oscar glory, and the only reason anyone watches is for entertainment value, which has been Gervais the last two shows. If he wasn’t hosting last night, I and many others probably wouldn’t have watched, and it will take a significant new host for me to even bother next year.

And as you can see in the video below, which shows a lot of Gervais’s best (and most harsh) jokes, celebrities like Robert Downey Jr., Tom Hanks, and Tim Allen can roll with the punches and keep right on doing what they’re there to do.

Check out the video and share your thoughts below. Did you enjoy Ricky Gervais and his brutally honest hosting job, or do you think he went so far that even if he makes a brilliant movie in the future, he won’t be allowed to be nominated?

I can say one thing for sure: not only do I think Gervais himself could care less if he’s never associated with the HFPA again, I’m willing to bet he was intent on seeing how far he could push before they reacted this way.

  1. I thought he did a fantastic job. The fact that he got the line, “I’d like to thank God for making me an Athiest” on American tv is pure genius.

    More Gervais!!

  2. I stopped caring about award shows when The Fellowship of the Ring was beat out of Best Picture by A Beautiful Mind at the 2002 Academy Awards. That’s when I knew it was all about money under the table. The shows themselves offer little, lasting entertainment value to me.

  3. I love Ricky Gervais. I’ve been a fan of his for several years. But last night I didn’t think that he was even remotely funny. Biting? Yes. Abrasive? Yes. Edgy? Sure. Mean spirited? Absolutely. Funny? Nope. Not even remotely humorous. He just came off as plain mean.

Well, except for his final remark of the night about ‘Thanking God… for making him an Atheist.” That was funny.

  5. Finally someone with sense! Ricky Gervais is and always will be an arrogant tosser that should not have been on TV to begin with. The office was complete garbage, and his stand up is not funny at all.

  8. It was a roast. He went up there and brought every skeleton out of the closet. He’s a comedian working with what he was given. A room full of starlets who have been in comedic movies should have taken it better.

As for Gervais, he shouldn’t worry about the golden globes or thier idiotic system. He’ll have fans regardless and I’m sure he just picked up a few more.

  9. I thought he was outstanding….ohhh he is making fun of celebrities, how dare he?!?!

Seriously Letterman, Leno, Conan and every single late night host makes nightly jabs at these exact celebrities when they aren’t even in the same room. Gervais had the balls to hammer the pampered stars to their face, and be absolutely hilarious in doing so.

I think its another perfect example of the majority of Americans not understanding the dry and blunt English humour. Maybe if it was re-made into a generic sitcom the entire country would love it.

  10. Let’s face it, nothing that he made fun was real news to us. So, technically he spoke the truth and pulled out facts that we already knew about. Yes, the HFPA takes bribes. Robert Downey, Jr. had a troubled past. The Tourist sucked. Tim Allen hasn’t won any major awards. Cher is an outdated robot. Sex in the City has a bunch of old, hag stars. Etc, etc.

So, they’re pissed at him for entertaining us with the truth? The Golden Globes is a drunk-fest anyway, so who cares? He added value to the show, but he could care less now. If anything, he attained notoriety for the banning. If the HFPA had just let it go quietly, then nothing would have been made of this. But instead, they just made him edgier and more in demand.
