Darren Aronofsky Working On A Batman Comic Book?
  |

Director Darren Aronofsky (The Fountain, Pi, Black Swan) revealed that he’s working on a Batman comic book project based on a script intended for film, according to a recent interview he did for Clothes To Film.

Aronofsky said the Batman comic hasn’t been officially announced — possibly indicating that he’s yet to approach DC Comics editorial office — and that the story is being adapted from a script that’s “difficult to make”.

Since Christopher Nolan is hard at work on the third installment of his own Batman trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises, it’s more-or-less safe to say that Aronofsky’s script is nothing more than a pet project at this point — meaning a comic book would make sense.

“We’re going to do a comic version first and see what happens,” Aronofsky said, indicating that a comic book would not necessarily dissuade him from pursuing a film version.

“It seems like if you come up with an original script, in Hollywood it’s not as effective as a comic book. It doesn’t even have to be successful as a comic; I mean how successful were Kick-Ass or Scott Pilgrim? Those were fringe comics, right, and they were basically turned in to big pictures.”

Would a successful Batman graphic novel help secure that Aronofsky would land the job as director of future Batman movies? It probably wouldn’t hurt, but he is overlooking one very large detail. The reason comics like Kick Ass and Scott Pilgrim were turned into movies had everything to do with them being solid stories regardless of any other medium than the ones they were originally intended for.

If Aronofsky is setting out to create the next Dark Knight Returns or Long Halloween, he may ruin any chance of directing Batman if his story isn’t up to par.

Would you add a hypothetical Aronofsky-Batman comic to your pull list at the comic shop?

  1. Having read the script for Aronofsky’s version of a Batman film, I think it would translate very well to a comic. It’s a bare bones Batman to say the least and is like Black Swan in that it’s a psychological study of a character. I thought it was already done as a comic, but I could be wrong.

  2. I’ve written for both films and comics, and comics basically feel like an easier and much simpler version of a movie script. With Aronofsky’s amazing storytelling skills in his previous movies, there is no reason why he would fail a superhero comic book.

Also, Kick Ass the movie was written at the same time as Kick Ass the comic; and Scott Pilgrim’s appeal was never its story either. So Aronofsky is actually right, he didn’t overlook anything.
