It’s been no secret since the release of Live Free or Die Hard, the fourth installment in the franchise, that star Bruce Willis was planning on making more at some point in the future.
Movement has been speeding up lately on what’s simply being called Die Hard 5 at the moment, and now the flick’s director has been chosen by 20th Century Fox and Willis. Deadline is reporting that Noam Murro will be taking the wheel on the project, which could become his third feature film.
Murro has only one completed credit to his name — 2008’s Smart People, which starred Ellen Page, Dennis Quaid, Thomas Hayden Church, and Sarah Jessica Parker — and has another currently in production called Hateship, Friendship, Courtship. These aren’t the credits of someone you would see directing a Die Hard movie, but these movies are also not what stood out to those who hired Murro — it was his work on some popular live-action Halo shorts made for the release of Halo: Reach that caught eyes and won him the job. You can see the videos below if you missed them.
Die Hard 5 has no production start or release date yet, but Skip Woods is working on the screenplay. Woods has an action-packed past, penning titles like Swordfish, Hitman, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and The A-Team.
As mentioned, Murro worked on the live-action shorts that had everyone buzzing once again about the possibility of a Halo movie finally being made…to no avail, sadly. It was these that supposedly landed him the Die Hard job and you can see them both here.
What do you think of a new Die Hard? The last one couldn’t have left a worse taste in my mouth, personally, but many seemed to dig it for some absurd reason or another. What has to happen for this to be a return to form?
So many people thought the new one was over the top, but so were the other ones. In order to attract an audience in todays world they had to make it almost unbelieveable, but for the most part it stuck really well to the ‘old cop in a fast moving world’ and i think it pulled that off really well.
John McClane is a badass who says everything with a sharp, brutally honest tongue. John McClane wasn’t in Live Free or Die Hard, and that’s the main reason I hated it.
It’s not about being over-the-top for me; I welcome that, much like the original three Indiana Jones flicks. But in Indy 4 they added loads of CGI and unneeded characters and it failed miserably. Opposite of adding stuff, Die Hard 4 tried to remove all the gritty, graphic tone that makes those movies so good, and that too failed.
I suppose if it were just an original action flick about cyber terrorism it’d have been alright, but because it tried to be a Die Hard movie it was a mess. Even the “unrated” version is just an embarrassment to try and watch.
Let’s hope they step it up and return to the roots of the franchise this time.
