‘I Am Number Four’ Director D.J. Caruso To Finally Bring ‘Preacher’ To Life?

A movie adaptation of Preacher has been talked about for so long that it’s rarely worth even bothering with news like this, but fans of the comic still hold on to hope that some day a faithful adaptation will find its way to the screen…or at least they did, until today that is.

According to director D.J. Caruso via his own Twitter account, he’s officially closed a deal to take on Preacher, making him the latest in a line of names attached to the movie at one point or another. Caruso is of course best known for his work on action/thrillers like Disturbia, Eagle Eye, and the new movie, I Am Number Four.

Some may still be gleeful at this news, but for the vast majority of Preacher fans it has to be a crushing blow. One of the problems that has always delayed the adaptation was the fact that it would have to be really dark and really violent and really R-rated — never a pleasing recipe to financiers. Caruso is making his mark with mediocre PG-13 movies, and a wave of panic is all but guaranteed, it not all-out rioting.

The Preacher adaptation was at one point looking at a possible series on HBO, which was far and away the smartest and most popular idea out there. How, with how much sense that strategy made, it or something like it never happened is beyond I.

The one ray of light here? Caruso was attached to direct the adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan’s Y: The Last Man for a very long time before that project was put on the shelf. Hopefully it will be revived again some day with a more fitting director (or even a TV series of its own), but Preacher fans will most likely be hoping for things to play out the same way here. Caruso was also said to be attached to helm a movie adaptation of the popular horror video game, Dead Space.

Speak your minds below; is D.J. Caruso the man you want bringing Preacher to the big screen?

  1. Not Caruso.. I am sorry but Preacher has to be dark and R-Rated. PG=13 Bullshit won’t cut it.
