‘Doctor Who’ MMO Coming This Year

The BBC has announced that Doctor Who fans are finally getting an online multiplayer game entitled Doctor Who: Worlds in Time, which is being developed by Three Rings. The game will be Flash-based and available for free. BBC and Three Rings are aiming for a launch later this year.

According to the BBC, the game will be designed to encourage cooperative interaction between players, in small and large groups. Challenges and missions will be customized for the size of the groups playing.

The announcement of Worlds in Time is an indication that the BBC is very interested in continuing to explore this media for the Doctor Who franchise. Last year they released more Doctor Who-based titles in video games including The Adventure Games, and Return to Earth for the Nintendo Wii.

As far as the game is concerned, Worlds In Time will allow players to enter the TARDIS to receive a challenge from The Doctor to complete, in the form of some mission that will pit them against some well-known Doctor Who enemies. The official press release elaborates further:

Robert Nashak, EVP Digital Entertainment at BBC Worldwide says, “Doctor Who: Worlds in Time will be a free-to-play multiplayer online game that invites players to save the universe by using their wits to solve time-bending puzzles and pulse-pounding challenges. Three Rings is the ideal team for this groundbreaking creative partnership. Not only are they visionaries in the online gaming space, they are lifelong Doctor Who fans with a passion for delivering the level of quality that our players will expect and deserve.”

Doctor Who: Worlds In Time is scheduled for launch later in 2011, and is being developed by Three Rings for BBC Worldwide.

  2. Now THAT would be interesting… could you imagine a Doctor Who game where you could be any of the 11 Doctors of your choice? That’s awesome!
