Punisher promo by Marco Checchetto

Rumors have been getting passed around about these two titles for the last few days, but Marvel officially announced the new creative teams for The Punisher and Daredevil during Saturday’s Cup o’ Joe panel at C2E2 2011.

Mark Waid, Paolo Rivera, and Marcos Martin will be taking over on Daredevil, while Greg Rucka and Marco Checchetto will be taking over The Punisher. (See Checchetto’s Punisher promo art here above.) The two new series will be released in July and August respectively, with new #1 issues for each series.

Both series have been in different kinds of hiatuses for the last few months. After the Shadowland story arc, the main Daredevil book was changed to Black Panther: The Man Without Fear (written by David Liss with art by Francesco Francavilla) and feature the Panther taking over for Matt Murdock in New York. Murdock’s adventures were split off into the Daredevil: Reborn mini-series (written by Andy Diggle, art by Davide Gianfelice), and followed Murdock as he took a Hulk-like walk to find himself. We are probably safe to assume that Murdock will be returning to New York for the new series, and to be honest I’m kind of sad to see Francavilla leave the main book, but excited to see what Waid and Rivera will do with the character.

The Punisher has also been in a state of flux for a while. After getting a new series a few years back, The Punisher went through his Franken-Castle stage for a while, and can currently be seen in a five-issue mini titled In The Blood (or in the Jason Aaron written Punishermax, but that’s in its own little universe). I think Rucka is a very interesting creator to work on the character. Rucka has made a name for himself by writing gritty character pieces, and he seems like a great fit for the character. His name is enough to at least give the series a shot.

Between these two series, and the previously announced Moon Knight by Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev, Marvel is putting a lot of focus on their street level characters, and they are getting a lot of good talent to go with them. If these live up to their potential, these could all be great series.
