Listen Now: New Devin Townsend Project Song From Upcoming Album ‘Ghost’

The Devin Townsend ProjectA new song by The Devin Townsend Project entitled “Feather,” from the upcoming release, Ghost, is now online. The album is anticipated to be out during Summer 2011. The tune is a big departure for Devin Townsend, mostly known for his work in the metal scene, and in the band, Strapping Young Lad. You can have a listen to “Feather,” originally from a free Century Media sampler, in the video player below.

Ghost is the fourth release in a four-part series released by The Devin Townsend Project. The project was begun by Townsend in 2009 in an attempt to extend his musical identity and push the boundaries beyond the musical styles he has played with in the past. Unlike his previous solo efforts and his work with Strapping Young Lad, each album takes on a particular sound, style, and feel, encompassing the different aspects of his music.

The first album in the series, Ki, was a laid-back mainly acoustic affair; while the second album, Addicted, is more metal with a pop-rock edge. The third and fourth albums, Deconstruction and Ghost respectively, will be released in June 2011. Deconstruction is expected to be some of Townsend’s heaviest and more brutal works, and is more in line with his metal roots.

Ghost, on the other hand, from which the sample below was recorded for, is a more ambient and experimental release. It’s said to be very mellow and exceptionally progressive. So, metalheads, when you click on the play button below, don’t expect some SYL brutality — this is another side to Devin’s music, a rare insight into his approach to other sounds and ideas.

Personally, I dig the sound of the tune, because it shows that while Devin Townsend is totally metal, he is a musician first, and unashamed to venture into new and alternative territories. I think the entire project will make a whole lot more sense when listeners get a chance to hear all four albums once they’re all out there.

Either way, I’m very much looking forward to the simultaneous release of the next two Devin Townsend Project albums in June; and I’m sure Devy fans highly anticipate what direction he will be taking in the future as well.

  1. Dein was amazing in London last night! If this is representative of ‘Ghost’, the album might come close to my favourite bits of ‘Ocean Machine: Biomech’ and ‘Terria’. If you’re interested, I’ve posted a detailed ‘Ziltoid’ review here: http://realgonerocks.blogspot.com/2011/03/whitesnake-forevermore.html
