Check Out Artist Mike Kelley’s Superman-Inspired ‘Kandors’
  |  @   |

Artist Mike Kelley spent a decade working on creating glass sculptures of Superman‘s Kryptonian bottle city of Kandor and now University of Chicago Press has collected photos of these creations for a new book, Mike Kelley: Kandors, available now.

See the image above of some of the artwork, and visit the NY Times blog to view a slideshow with more pictures of these works.

Along with the photos, the book is said to chronicle Kelley’s lengthy journey in creating these artworks and the stumbling blocks he came across while doing it, like acquiring large enough glass and figuring out the look of Kandor from its comic book sources.

Kandor was the capital city of Superman’s home planet Krypton. When the planet was destroy and the infant Kal-El (later to become Superman) was sent to Earth, he was believed to be the sole survivor. But it turned out that Kandor had been miniaturized and stolen long before the planet’s destruction, so the city remained intact contained inside a bell jar.

You can see why it’d be the perfect subject for a glass sculpture, and Kelley’s colorful depictions are truly a site to behold.
