It seems like we’ve heard about a multitude of movie adaptations of the works of Ray Bradbury over the years, but but very few have actually been made…not counting A Sound of Thunder, of course, which might be one of the reasons these other films have had so much trouble.
One of the projects we’ve heard was getting a movie treatment more than once, is Bradbury’s The Martian Chronicles. It was first acquired by Universal Pictures in 1997 with Steven Spielberg attached as a producer, but that never worked out. And if Steven Spielberg’s name isn’t enough to get a movie to happen, you know you have tough road ahead. Back in June of 2010 we once again heard that a movie was on the way, this time at Fox, but apparently that one never worked out either.
It’s now being reported that The Martian Chronicles has a new home at Paramount Pictures, who will take their best shot at finally making the movie happen.
If it does ever happen, the movie would tell the story of an Earth on the verge of nuclear war and being completely uninhabitable by human beings. This forces humanity to decide that they must colonize Mars, but conflict with the native Martians quickly arises.
If the movie does happen at Paramount, John Davis, who’s been behind the project all along, will produce.
Am I the only one that actually enjoyed “A Sound of Thunder”? I know it gets picked apart for the CG effects but I don’t think they were that bad. Honestly, Sci-Fi Channel *still* produces movies with worse CG even half a dozen years later! (ok…that doesn’t say much but you get the idea) Maybe it was an unfaithful adaptation? I never read the Ray Bradbury story it was based on but judging only the movie, there are definitely far worse movies out there!
I liked the flick, but the CG was abysmal and it really took me out of the movie (especially the building and car shots). If someone could go back and fix the effects, it would be great.
The original is a short story, so the movie had to be fleshed out a bit. If you haven’t read any of Bradbury’s stuff, I highly recommend it. Although science and space exploration have taken away some of the fantasy of his stories, they’re still fantastic to read. Of course, he wrote them long before we knew a lot about Mars and space travel.
He is truly under-appreciated. And he’s still alive…he’s 90!
