One of the biggest events in DC Comics has come with the brand new War of the Green Lanterns story which is pitting Green Lanterns against each other. Part five of this epic event lands in Green Lantern #65 in which we see Guy, John, Kyle, and Hal without their rings and donning new rings to try and bring down the renegade guardian Krona who has taken over Oa and returned Parallax to the giant battery and made the rest of the guardians hosts for the other Lantern entities he has stolen.
This issue shows Hal Jordan and Guy Gardner flying a “suped” up shuttle from a Lantern safehouse to OA in order to find Kyle and John who are being tracked by the “infected” corps. This issue feels like a great buddy cop movie but set in space. The end of the book shows Kyle, Hal, John and Guy wearing other Corps rings to stop Krona.
Geoff Johns once again writes one hell of a story and you can see how much emotion and passion he pours into these characters. The whole dialogue between Hal and Guy when they are about to take off in the shuttle is classic and fun. This is definitely the book that Johns needs to stay on because of how consistent he is with the writing.
Doug Mahnke draws this book like he owns it and delivers with every panel. His artwork complements the writing of Johns very well. The facial expressions on the characters is great and how he does not “bulk out” the characters of the series makes this a believable and enjoyable book.
All and all, Green Lantern #65 is worth every penny. I give it a five out of five.
