‘Oldboy’ Remake Might Still Be Alive, And It Might Just Get Directed By Spike Lee
  |  @   |

Last we heard, a remake of the the classic South Korean film, Oldboy, was on the way with Steven Spielberg directing and Will Smith starring. This sounded like an April Fools joke at first, and thankfully things never came together to the delight of many fans.

Now another potentially true April Fools–sounding bit of news has come to surface. According to Twitch, Mandate Pictures still plans on remaking Oldboy, and they’re now in negotiations with Spike Lee to direct it. Lee, of course, is best known for films like Malcolm X, Inside Man, and Miracle at St. Anna.

In the original movie, a man is kidnapped and held prisoner for 15 years without any knowledge of why this is being done to him. One day he is randomly released, again, without any explanation whatsoever, leaving him more puzzled than ever. But he does have a few very small items to start him on his quest for answers and revenge on those who put him through so many years of torment.

Mark Protosevich was the last to write a script for the movie, and it’s unclear whether his work will still be used or if a new writer and/or new draft will be ordered. Protosevich has previously worked on the scripts for Thor, I Am Legend, Poseidon, and The Cell.

If an Oldboy remake has to happen, would you rather see the Spielberg version, the Spike Lee version, or is there someone better for the job out there?

  1. this sounds like a Chris Nolan type of film. And I know not all films are Chris Nolan type of film, but the enviorment of the story and setting screams Chris Nolan.
