Unless you’ve been hibernating for the last decade or two, you know that Hollywood will make a movie based on pretty much any video game, toy, or theme park ride. It’s something that we’ve grown used to over the years, and sometimes the movies actually end up being a lot of fun.
The next classic game to get the movie treatment is one that any game fan born before 1990 has most likely played at least once in their lifetime: Space Invaders.
The arcade game comes from designer Tomohiro Nishikado, and was first released by Japanese company Taito Corporation in 1978, and then in the United States through Midway Games.
Because it’s an arcade game, there’s not a whole lot of story going on here. This isn’t a movie that writes itself…not in the least. That leaves producers Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Gigi Pritzker of Odd Lot Entertainment””who joined forces to option the rights to and develop the movie adaptation together””currently seeking the perfect writer to structure a story out of the property.
Of course that just means that we’re almost definitely looking at yet another alien invasion movie, basically. It’s hard to figure out a way they could find an original and unique way to approach the project…though it would be refreshing if they could.
No word yet on when we might see the Space Invaders movie.
