During the Dark Horse Presents panel today at San Diego Comic-Con 2011 an icon of the world of comics rose from the audience and took the stage to announced that one of his classic graphic novels will be reissued by Dark Horse Comics.
Red Tide was originally published in 1976 and was Steranko’s attempt at bringing true suspense to the world of comics. Steranko explained: “I realized pretty early on that there was this intensity in film that I never got anywhere else. I had this idea that there is a way to make this form {comics} more suspenseful. That’s one of the reasons I did Red Tide.” He further explained how he took this story outside the normal paneled, word ballooned, and captioned formula of comics and tried to utilize some of what makes regular novels successful at building intensity and suspense with words. He showed in a presentation how he broke his pages into thirds with two images and text.
The book in its original form will be reissued, and previewed in Dark Horse Presents #3 as well as an all new “remastered” version of the book with deeper colors and color decisions made with cinematic lighting in mind. Some samples of Steranko’s new color work were showed in a slide show that wowed the audience. Look for the preview in the upcoming Dark Horse Presents #3 with the books soon to follow.
