Brand New ‘Tales From The Crypt’ Being Developed For Return To TV
  |  @   |

Back in 1989, a series called Tales from the Crypt debuted on HBO and would continue to run until 1996. The series was based on the 1950s EC Comics title of the same name, which also spawned a 1972 anthology movie, three feature films in Demon Knight, Bordello of Blood, and a third much less–know title, Ritual, as well as the still–strange–to–think–about Saturday morning cartoon, Tales from the Cryptkeeper, and a kid’s game show called Secrets of the Cryptkeeper’s Haunted House. The Cryptkeeper (voiced by John Kassir) himself was a pop culture horror icon, known for his unsettling appearance and oddly appealing cheesy sense of humor. Even I as a child had a Cryptkeeper mask for Halloween!

Now comes word of a proposed revival of the series now being planned. Gil Adler, a producer on the original HBO series, along with Andrew Cosby, a co–creator of Syfy’s Eureka and co–founder of BOOM! Studios, have teamed up to develop the new Tales from the Crypt, and they will pitch the project to networks soon.

If the new Tales from the Crypt makes it to TV, it sounds as though it won’t be quite the same as it once was, however. Cosby explained, saying “It will be an ongoing series that uses characters from the comic books in a more modern context. It’s all about continually elevating the genre, for both existing fans of the source material and mainstream audiences.”

Unfortunately, that likely means the Cryptkeeper bits at the opening wouldn’t be involved, and that’s a little depressing. Hopefully they can figure out a way to still involve the old man.

And where might we see Tales from the Crypt? That’s still up in the air. There are rumors of HBO’s sister station, Cinemax, being interested (which would be ideal), but it sounds like all options are still possible””meaning we could also see it somewhere like a Syfy (which would be much less ideal).

What do you think about the possible return of Tales from the Crypt?

  1. please not Syfy. that “thing” is an abomination of shit movies, wrestling, and the occasional good series (which they WILL cancel).

  2. I was excited until I heard no Cryptkeeper and it might end up on basic cable meaning censored. Way to give my hopes up HBO.
