Robert Rodriguez is a busy man. He started a new production company and is hard at work on scripts for Machete 2 and Sin City 2 along with a handful of other projects [Read SDCC 2011: Robert Rodriguez Going Ahead With “˜Sin City’, “˜Machete’ Sequels via Quick Draw]. At San Diego Comic-Con 2011 last week the filmmaker debuted a bevy of original Frank Frazetta paintings to celebrate the upcoming launch of a new museum curated by Rodriguez featuring the master of fantasy art’s works from Rodriguez’s personal collection. The museum will of course be located in Austin, Texas.

Rodriguez also announced that he would be remaking a cult classic Frazetta film Fire and Ice. The 1983 film was a collaboration between Frank Frazetta and Ralph Bakshi. The original fantasy animated film centers around the battle between good and evil represented in the form of fire and ice. The evil ice lord is intent on conquering the world, starting with a small village with his glaciers. When he kidnaps the daughter of the good fire king, an epic battle follows.

The film is still in the early stages and there was no release date announced.

While in San Diego for the convention, I got a chance to view the collection of Frazetta paintings at a special invite-only party. No photographs of the painting were allowed at the event, but I can tell you that the paintings were amazing and in mint condition. They were displayed and lit gallery-style — hung at eye level with can lights for each painting as well as roped off to keep people from getting to close. Along with the actual paintings there were flat panel displays running bright HD slideshows of the paintings.
