Syfy Decides To Cancel ‘Eureka’ After Season 5 Concludes
  |  @   |

Syfy doesn’t seem to be making any friends lately. After the network decided to cancel shows like the Battlestar Galactica spinoff/prequel, Caprica, and Stargate Universe, while adding mind–boggling non–science fiction fare like World Wrestling Entertainment’s Smackdown, former fans aren’t too intent on sticking around.

Now Syfy is adding to the growing number of unhappy fans with news that they will be canceling Eureka after the show’s fifth season ends.

The only good thing for those who watch, is that Eureka isn’t being killed on the spot like so many other shows have been. Production on season 5 is happening right now, and, after a holiday special in December, the 12–episode finale season will run in 2012. So you still have time to enjoy a whole new season before it’s gone forever (and a chance to try and get as many people to watch as possible in hopes of Syfy changing their mind).

The bad news, however, is that Syfy was apparently thinking about doing a shortened 6–episode 6th and final season to wrap things up, but have ultimately decided not to take that route. With only a couple of weeks left filming season 5, producers are now scrambling to figure out a way to tie their storylines together in a way that will please fans.

Here’s the statement released by Syfy:

After painstaking consideration, we have had to make the difficult business decision to not order a season six of Eureka.

But Eureka is not over yet. There is a new holiday episode this December and 12 stellar episodes set to debut next year, marking its fifth season and six memorable years on Syfy. The 2012 episodes are some of the best we’ve seen, and will bring this great series to a satisfying end.

We are very grateful to Bruce Miller and Jaime Paglia, their team of incredible writers, and an amazing cast and crew who have consistently delivered a series we continue to be very proud of. We thank the fans for their support of this show and know they will enjoy its final season in 2012.

I don’t know what the logic is behind all these cancellations or how Syfy plans to keep viewers returning for new shows, but it’s looking more and more like they’re either going to have to revive BSG or find a way to get their hands on Firefly to win back the hearts they’ve lost.

What are your thoughts on Syfy canceling Eureka?

  3. It’s just bizarre. With those numbers the show HAD to be profitable, surely?

  4. I don’t even watch the show and I can say this with certainty:  They are idiots.  Everyone that I know who watches it says that it’s great.  Leave it to the morons over at that Channel to doom themselves.

  5. This totally sucks.  What used to be my favorite channel is slowly going mainstream and will lose the vast majority of their regular die-hard fans.  Too bad.  Whoever is in charge must not be a sci-fi person and doesn’t realize how many of us there are.  Please bring back some good sci-fi programming and lose the wrestling
    +++.

  6. This was posted on Will Wheaton tumblr:
“Everyone is asking why. It’s simple, really. We are the network’s golden child in every way, except profit margins. Fact is, Eureka is an expensive show to make. And we could not maintain the quality of our show with the cuts it would take to make us profitable for Syfy’s new parent company. Our creative execs at Syfy fought hard to keep us. Trust me, they LOVE us. We just couldn’t make the numbers work.”

  7. It never fails, Executives get a popular show and have to make the asinine decision to cancel it. SyFy had better set up and take notice that we as fans WANT Science Fiction shows.

  8. They said business decision, seems to me that the actors started to want more money, and SyFy said no your canceled.

  9. So SyFy is a code word for wrestling even though it sounds like you should be able watch science fiction when you tune in. No different than the redefinition of history (History Channel shows mostly alternate “history” shows), science (Discovery shows tons of ghost hunters) and life (TLC where you get to learn about Toddlers in Tiaras).

  11. It’s like SyFy is trying to find ways to make more people hate them.

  12. so costs make it too high to continue the show, here’s an idea:  kill off your damn reality shows, that’ll give you enough money to make Eureka which has better drama, acting than any reality show ever had or will have.

  14. Are you kidding me? Is SyFy bringing in another wrestling show..maybe MMA….or another stupid ass ghost show? Are they fuck’in kidding me? All that’s left is Warehouse 13…which is great, so that meams they’ll be taking that off the air soon.

  15. Ahhhh, so this is how Syfy plans on getting the money to make more unforgettable “original” movies.

  16. We shoulda known what blithering idiots run the channel when they changed the name from SciFi to SyFy – this just confirms it even more…

    Comment by Martin W. — August 10, 2011 @ 9:09 am

  17. I have staunchly defended SyFy’s decisions to cancel shows like BSG and Atalantis, based on the high cost of continuing to produce the high quality of shows that we as viewers expect vs. revenue (the other option being loss of quality).  Putting on wrestling was, I’m sure, a high reward, low cost option which I expected was made to generate revenue to continue to produce better programming elsewhere.  Unfortunately, it is becoming clearer that SyFy is heading towards the demise of quality original programming, like Eureka and Warehouse 13 (which is obviously next on the chopping block), and opting for low budget disaster movies and old sci-fi reruns…along with wrestling and reality.  If they keep this up, there will no longer be a reason to watch.

    Comment by Trekatch — August 10, 2011 @ 9:46 am

  18. I can’t believe the amount of studios cancelling good original shows… Did they factor in DVD sales and re-runs when considering to keep the show?

  19. What will be the point of watching a sci fi channel when there is no sci fi or fantasy on it. I have loads of channels with reality and wrestling only one was what I wanted to watch and that seems to be loosing its grip on what made it intersting.

  21. syfy’s new slogan is simply “Fuck it.”

  22. Syfy will suffer massively because of
their stupid decisions on not renewing one of the best shows they ever
had.  Eureka will be missed and everyone
will hate Syfy for doing such an incredibly stupid move, and the president of
Syfy is a complete idiot for deciding to make such imbecilic decision, he will
eventually fire himself for such a stupid decision.

    Comment by Miguel — April 23, 2012 @ 8:52 pm

  23. Other than Warehouse 13 and possibly Alphas, there is nothing on SYFY worth watching. The movies are the most graphically inept junk I believe has ever been put on a station. Bright side, I can find a number of other things to occupy my time. Watching SYFY will not be one of them. Got my veiwing package to make sure SYFY was included so I may be able to save some money when I get rid of their channel because it is not worth having any longer.

  24. What a disappointment!!! We, especially “Syfy”, need shows like Eureka to
inspire imagination and creativity in a non-doomsday fashion. Maybe a
bit ahead of reality, but it hints at some practical applications of
developing science and technology. I preferred the old Sci-fi (science
fiction) to Syfy (silly fiction) which deals more in haunted houses and
superstition than science fiction. As for wrestling…..what the h—!!!
Maybe an email campaign to Comcast would bring it back. Especally now,
that science is unlocking the secrets of Higgs-Boson.
