Guillermo del Toro Says New Game ‘inSANE’ Has H.P. Lovecraft Qualities
  |  @   |

Given that Universal Pictures recently denied us of another exciting Guillermo del Toro monster movie””the H.P. Lovecraft adaptation, At the Mountains of Madness“”it’s no great shock that the director has integrated a little Lovecraft inspiration into other projects of his.

For those who didn’t know, del Toro is a geek and a gamer at heart, and he’s been hard at work stepping into the realms of video games. He admittedly was clueless going in, but he’s learned a lot as production on the game he’s working on with THQ and Volition Inc., inSANE, has moved forward. And now del Toro shares that the game has a “Lovecraftian” quality to it, making it even more exciting than it once was.

Continue reading for more, and to see the super teaser trailer for inSANE you have not yet seen it.

Not much was known about the game other than it’s being planned as a trilogy and that it’s going to scare the life out of people, but del Toro added to that just a bit in a recent chat with MTV. He shared that it’s going to be a huge game, sandbox style, and that the creatures involved should be pretty special. But unfortunately for us, inSANE is still a couple of years off at least, so a long wait is in our future.

Speaking about the progress and the Lovecraft inspirations, del Toro said:

We’ve been working for a year. We have two or three more years to go. It’s huge. I’m learning a lot. I’m going in with a really, really modest ‘I’m learning’ approach. I’m a huge gamer but going into constructing it, you have to be respectful of the medium. I’m learning a lot. Talking about the storyline for weeks. We’ve been designing the creatures, which are obscenely fun and unique. You haven’t seen them ever.

It’s Lovecraftian, it’s really weird, but it’s Lovecraftian in a very sick way, which I like. It’s truely, truely entertaining. Full of action, but also a very shocking game. And Guy Davis and Francisco [Ruis Velasco]. Guy Davis, to me, is one of the best monster designers alive right now.

Once the game arrives, del Toro will have worked on video games, writing, directing, and producing movies, books (The Strain), television (the Incredible Hulk project being developed with David Eick), comic books, and pretty much every other aspect of entertainment short of recording his own album of pop song covers (which I would totally buy).

His next movie project is yet another monster flick, Pacific Rim, which he moved right into after At the Mountains of Madness went comatose. And since del Toro put loads of work into developing Mountains and keeping it as close to the studio’s set guidelines as possible (without budging on his R-rating), it’s almost expected that that too will have some Lovecraft inspirations embedded in it somewhere…but that is to be seen.
