Super MarioSuper Mario: How Nintendo Conquered America
By Jeff Ryan
Hardcover | Kindle
Portfolio/Penguin
Release date: August 4, 2011

In Super Mario: How Nintendo Conquered America, author Jeff Ryan gives an insightful and thorough look at the history of the Nintendo corporation through their many successes and failures. The book chronicles three important generations of Nintendo: The Joystick, The D-Pad, and Motion.

I’ve been a Nintendo fan for all of my life. I’ve owned almost every version of the Nintendo gaming console, except for the Nintendo 64 and the GameCube. The images of Mario and his brother Luigi have always been a staple of my gaming history. Born in the early 80s, I’ve had a fondness for the plumber brothers and the many adventures that they have taken.

Ryan’s book brought me back to the early days of Nintendo and the strategies that the company took to make some of their high profiles games like Super Mario Bros, The Legend of Zelda, and of course Donkey Kong. It was fun to read about the time periods when each Nintendo game and system where coming out. It was also interesting to read about the decisions that the Nintendo Corporation made to release each console and how they had to compete with video game heavy hitters like Sega in the early 1990s, and Sony and Microsoft up to today.

As you read the book, you can tell that author Jeff Ryan has a love for the character of Mario and for the world of Nintendo. The book never had a dull moment as the author infuses his detailed knowledge of Nintendo with dashes of humor to keep the book engaging and fun.

If you’re a fan of video games or just want to know more thorough knowledge on the Nintendo Corporation and its cast of characters, I would recommend picking up Super Mario: How Nintendo Conquered America. It’s a very interesting read for hardcore and casual gamers.
